I need a game for my Dad for Christmas. Aside from freeverse products, which I'm checking out, I've no idea what's out there. His needs are not too sophisticated; he likes Doom and other FPS, but also card/puzzle games.

Yes, a 2007 iMac OSX 10.5. I should have mentioned that.

Kitty Spangles either Solitaire or Sudoku is the kind of game a girl would die for (cause is beyond cute) but it might be worth a look.

Bejeweled 2 with Peggle

Personally, I think that there are enough free flash games so I wouldn't buy this. $20 is a bit limiting (IMHO).

Thanks, I'd somehow forgot popcap made games besides Facebook games! He has bejewelled though, but I'm checking out Plants vs Zombies. I think he has another game like Zuma, but that looks good too.

I'm not thinking you'll have much luck with a shareware FPS, but there are probably some good puzzle games. I know World of Goo was popular recently. Plants vs. Zombies is a good one too. I know a lot of people who got hooked on that.

if he does multiplayer online games World of Padman is fast and funny. Sadly not much single player support.

I realize this one is >$20 (@$30) but Jets'n'Guns Gold is a blast to play.

Blizzard has many inexpensive games, too. If he likes RPGs then IMHO you can't do much better, especially if he has never played any of these. Diablo 2, StarCraft and WarCraft 3 still rank as the most fun for $20 and the games are HUGE! They have enough blood to satisfy the razor lust of any video game player.

I second World of Goo.
I'm on MacNN forums, but no longer have a Mac...

World of Goo was a contender, but I think with Popcap's big sale today, maybe Plants vs Zombies is the one.

Then again, I've just spent a half hour on the Goo demo, and could see how it could be addicting. Hmmm...

World of Goo is very fun. I don't know how much of a challenge he likes, but I think it's worth pointing out that World of Goo gets a little more difficult later on while Plants vs. Zombies starts easy and ends easy.

World of Goo! World of Goo! World of Goo!

I thought Plants vs. Zombies was a bit too easy, but I've been playing video games since I was about six, so I might not be the best judge.

Popcap has all of their games on sale for $9.95 until December 27th... Peggle and Plants vs Zombies is especially fun.
