Rise of the Triad Has Already Turned A Profit | Game Front
While no official budget or sales figures have been released, rumor has it that Rise of the Triad cost under $500,000 to produce, marketing budget included. Using the half-a-million figure as a ceiling, it sounds like the DRM-free indie shooter has sold at least 30,000 copies.

After the above tweet, we reached out to Interceptor for comment.

“Interceptor set out to create a specific game for a specific audience on day one,” said Dave Oshry. “We knew that if we kept costs down and delivered what we promised through the right distribution channels for that audience, we’d be successful. Steam, GOG and Green Man Gaming have been amazing partners for Interceptor and Apogee, and we can’t thank them enough for helping us to get ROTT out there so much so that we turned a profit in week one.”
Why aren't bigger publishers doing this?

The same reason there has been little innovation in gameplay the last 5-10 years. Millions of people will buy CoD:New And Shiny or Halo 12:Now with more space jump. There's no reason to target niche when they can slap some new explosion sprites on a proven system and head to the bank.

Dead Space 3 and Tomb Raider are two more recent titles that fail on that.

Nope. They need a model without Kinect for $400 or less for me to consider purchasing it.

They still haven't mentioned if you can use your X-Box live account with both systems.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

In all honesty, the only thing that has given me pause is Titanfall. That game at least looks very, very interesting. By the again, so did Homefront, And MAG. And about a billion other games.

On that note...The Order: 1886.

That was widely reported but not exactly true. The earnings statement said that total sales of major console games fell below expectations, and new reporters looked at the biggest sellers from Squenix and put them in the headlines. Tomb Raider had the best launch of any game in the series - the actual failure was Sleeping Dogs, which sold well below expectations.

They should have called it Silent Dogs. It didn't have enough marketting. It was a great game, though. GTA and Saint's Row, give their product much more marketting, and therefor they sell.

This is the reason for the sequelitis. It's so much cheaper to launch a sequel to a known series than to try to sell a completely new title.

I agree. My question is if their expectations or budget will be more... reserved.

Haven't heard from mattyb or Jawbone, but if they're not on board, yeah the franchise might finally be on the downswing.

Is this a big deal?
Xbox One Launch Markets Confirmed
Today we’re providing an update to our launch plans for Xbox One. At Xbox, our goal is to provide the best games and entertainment experience possible and the team continues to make great progress on delivering Xbox One.

At E3, we announced that Xbox One would be available in 21 markets around the world at launch. This was an aggressive goal and the team has been working very hard to deliver Xbox One to as many markets as possible.

Our priority is ensuring our customers get the best Xbox One experience the first day it is available. To do that, and in order to meet demand, we have adjusted the number of markets that will receive Xbox One in November to 13 markets, including Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand, in November.

We remain committed to launching Xbox One in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, as soon as possible in 2014.

While we wish we could launch Xbox One simultaneously in these markets, there are many factors that determine the timing of specific market launches. This includes work to localize the Xbox One dash, incorporate additional voice and languages, and build partnerships to bring apps and meaningful local content to each country.

We understand this will be disappointing news for our fans in the impacted countries, and we are doing everything we can to bring Xbox One to you as soon as possible next year.

If you are in these markets and have questions about your pre-order, please contact the local retailer where you placed your pre-order. To show our appreciation for your patience, if you have already preordered an Xbox One Day One system before today in those countries, you will also receive a pack-in game with your console when it launches.*

Thank you for your patience – we are grateful for your support and remain committed to delivering the best Xbox One experience for your market.

I'm with matty. I'll almost certainly hop onto Battlefield, but CoD is much dead to me. Despite my ins-and-outs in the series, I played the smithereens out of Black Ops 2 — so much so that the thought of doing it again makes me gag.

I'm hoping that a new, top-tier title piques everyone's interest. I'll be buying two games: FIFA and whatever shooter everyone decides to try out together. My guess is that everyone will gravitate toward BF4.

The Killzone series was a really good change-of-pace shooter, but people dropped out pretty quickly, and it became difficult to find a lobby after a half-year or so. It featured an awesome mode that would switch from capture the flag, to team deathmatch, to VIP, to demolition, all within the same match. I didn't do a great job of explaining it, but it was my favorite thing about the multiplayer. The game will just depend on how many people pick up PS4s, and whether or not a sufficient number will try it out.

I'm trying to Google which markets got the shaft...

The big markets are North America, Australia, Western Europe, and Japan, right?

Confirmed:
- U.S.
- Canada
- Mexico
- United Kingdom
- Ireland
- France
- Germany
- Italy
- Spain
- Austria (???)
- Australia
- New Zealand

So who got shafted and pushed into 2014?
- Belgium
- Denmark
- Finland
- Netherlands
- Norway
- Sweden
- Switzerland
- Russia

And who receives no mention at all?
- Japan
- South Korea
- China
- Portugal
- Israel
- Turkey
- Basically the entire Middle East (expected)
- Papua New Guinea

As I'm looking at this, taking into account the XBox 360's audience...this all means.................absolutely nothing. They're hitting the markets where they need to gain a foothold.

And does Japan really even matter? Aren't they just spending time on mobile games?

The reason I ask is because some people seem to think it indicates manufacturing problems.

As for Japan, between its xenophobia and lack of interest in consoles, MS shouldn't even bother (though I'm sure that will be seen as a slight even though they don't buy it).

Considering the similarities in hardware, wouldn't manufacturing problems for MSoft = manufacturing problems for Sony?

The difference is that big eSRAM cache and the process to attach it (interposer or similar). The PS4 SOC is much simpler by comparison. Supply problems are a definite possibility - especially if the rumors are true that MS is clocking up both the GPUand the eSRAM to try to match Sony better.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Russia was never a first tier market, I think, but otherwise you are correct. They're ditching Scandinavia, which was a very competitive market this time round, the Benelux countries and Switzerland. Odd choices - Scandinavian economies are actually doing OK, especially compared to Southern Europe, Benelux is much the same and Switzerland isn't exactly poor. I think they're cutting their losses by abandoning markets, and doing so by picking small countries to abandon (all are below 20 million, and most below 10). Eastern Europe doesn't even have a launch date.

Good grief...

Microsoft cannot handle another PR disaster with the XBox One.

I'm still waiting to hear what a monthly Gold membership is going to cost.
[EDIT] I saw that the XBL Gold price "isn't going up," but I'll believe it when the console launches, especially with this new home plan.

I think the PR disaster has happened for anyone in the removed countries. Anyone else is unlikely to care - constrained availability didn't hurt the Wii any.

GTA 5 will have an attached MMO world with GTA Online | Ars Technica
Grand Theft Auto Online, an MMO-style component to the upcoming GTA 5, was announced today in a trailer posted by Rockstar Games. GTA Online with have a “persistent, continually expanding” environment and peripheral activities for players to participate in, like parachuting off cliffs and arm-wrestling matches.

According to the trailer, players will be able to earn money and reputation through the GTA Online universe’s missions. The game appears to feature dungeon-like engagements that players can pursue when they “band together to form a crew” to, for instance, shoot up and rob a bank. Players can “compete in classic online modes,” per the trailer, which appears to mean the game will feature PvP-style battles.

Money and reputation that players earn can be used to customize their characters’ appearance, weapons, and vehicles. Players will also be able to buy space in the game, described as apartments where “friends can stop by and hang out.”
I haven't seen the trailer, but I'm not exactly floored by the description. I'll be curious as to what effect the persistence has on the world, if any.

Forgot to respond to this. I don't think it matters what brand there is on the box, because there are only four companies in the world with the foundries to make those SOCs. Intel won't do it. While they do work as a foundry in edge cases now, that is rare and only for markets where they don't compete at all. Samsung I think only works with low-power mobile chips, and in any case I think at least Sony would avoid putting something like this at Samsung for risk of a Galaxy console cropping up in a year or two. This leaves two: TSMC and GlobalFoundries. AMD makes both the CPUs with the Jaguar cores (Kabini & Temash) and its GPUs at TSMC, so I always assumed that both the SOCs came from there. Thinking more about it, that's not given. The on-chip cache thing is in many ways an evolution of the same thing in the Xbox 360 GPU, and that one was fabbed by GlobalFoundries (then as part of AMD). Could it be that MS fabs their chips at GF and Sony theirs at TSMC? That would explain the shortage - TSMC has had issues with that process, but they have cleared them out more than a year ago. If it's a completely new chip for GF, it's not unlikely that their yields are bad.

MS' decision to design their SOC around that on-package cache and cheapskate memory is looking worse by the minute.
