I've ordered a couple of new hard drives, one for the MacBook and one for the PS3 as they're both getting full. I'm ok with the screwdriver bit with the PS3, not so much with the backing up. To reduce the backup file size, can I get rid of game installs but keep my game saves? So that when I transfer to the new drive I can reinstall the games and carry on where I was. As I understand it the backup drive must be FAT32 which has a 32 gig limit, so I'll either have to faff around with backing up to several FAT32 partitions or get the backup size down to less than 32 gig without losing important stuff.
One other thing I just want to confirm. If I delete PSN download game data, I can delete the games, keep the saves and re download the games without paying for them again?

The PSN data and settings save to system. Your PSN account flags that what you download and you can re download them no problem. All you need to backup are the saves, just note some of these idiot developers have locked save files so there might be a case of not being able to do a direct copy, so a backup will be your only option. What I did was just move my saves onto a thumb drive.

Does a USB thumb drive for backing up the game saves have to be FAT32?

Well it had to happen, I have a problem.
I have the PS3UPDAT.PUP file on a FAT32 USB stick, with the PS3 > UPDATE folder structure. The original drive is backed up onto the MacBooks old hard drive reformatted to FAT32 in a USB case. The new hard drive is in the PS3 and getting it to boot is a no go. I've tried writing the PS3UPDAT.PUP file to a disc and putting that in, but it can't find a system. I've read that it might be because the files are coming from a Mac, and I need to get the files written onto a PC Formatted FAT32.
At the moment the PS3 is just going between the screen that says
The system software cannot be run correctly. Press the PS button to try to restart the system.
If the system cannot be restarted, the system partition of the hard disk must be reformated and you must install the system software. Insert storage media that contains update data of version 3.61 or later, and then press the START and SELECT buttons at the same time.
For information on how to obtain update data, refer to the SCE web site for your region
and asking to press the PS button on the controller. Nothing else happens.

I shouldn't matter what OS formats it, as long as you format it as FAT32. I formatted mine on a Macbook Pro with Disk Utility and was good to go. Hmmm.
Worse case you can put your original drive in... plug your new one in as an external and use the PS3 Format Utility

Sorted now, its restoring the system to the new drive. Don't know what happened the first time, I've just had one of those weeks.
