How do I display the fps?

no...that didn't work. Just kept on saying unknown command.

Sure it does. I just did it on my iBook 500 (sitting to my immediate right). hit ~ (tilde, next to the number 1) to bring down the console, and type /cg_drawfps (FOLLOWED BY A SPACE) 1 and press enter. Did you have a space after /cg_drawfps and the 1? Did you type /cg_drawftp or something? I *constantly* do that. Something about seeing a console and having to type ftp, or something. Hope that helps.
