OK, here goes. I'm having a heart attack.
I recently got an iMac, so I decided to just copy my whole updated DiabloII folder from my old (now sold) computer, a G4, via networking. SO, I did that...saved the old preferences, and brought the whole app across. SO.....I hadn't played it since then, so just now I dropped the prefs in the Prefs Folder and fired it up. I went into single player, saw that everything was there, and then loaded my beloved Necro-Man, a Lvl 52 Necromancer.
Let me tell you about Necro-Man: he is the shiet. Bone Spirit does 300 damage, the best amulets and armour that you can get. I can finish Hell final levels at will...no prob. He is ALSO 100% legit, with the exception of some of the armour I got on Battle.net and can't vouch for.
ANYWAY...I loaded up, and choked. You see, I have basic armour, all my stuff is replaced with what I'm wearing, which is level-1 cheap stuff. I'm BACK at level 26!!!!!!!! I have 125 Characteristic points to distribute, and about 26 Spell points (my extras from up to level 52)........MY CHARACTER IS HALVED!!!!!!!! I had about 6 items in my inventory alone, all worth $25 000 (the maximum) each....all gone. My Stash and Cube were stuff full with other High-level items..I didn't bother to look and see if they were there.
I panicked. I force-quit. Quitting normally will automatically save the character, and there's no way I could do that. I don't mind the redistribution of my points....at least I could make up for some mistakes I made. BUT MY ITEMS!!!!!! I had the ultimate BEST items you could get.....every single one unique, every one rare and hard to get.....I was STACKED. Everyone I met begged me for trades. I could cower wannabes with an ITEM, for friggin' f*ck's sake.
So. What do I do? Anyone have any ideas? I've never heard of this before in my life....it's screwing with my mind.................

Oh man I really feel for you. Nothing worse thane when you spend all that time and lose a character like that.
I believe there is a third party program available that will let you correctly save your characters (non realms and single player oonly of course) to individual files stored at your location of choice. This backup utility is what you need. Unfortunately it wont bring back your character on this occassion however.
There are also some utilities which illegitimately allow you to spawn/create characters form scratch - assignb them level, health, mana, stats items etc. This is your only choice for "restoring" your character -= I hope you have a good memory. I dont belive this is cheating either if you are simply "restoring" a lost character.
Now for file locations - ummm, try planetdiablo.com, fileplanet.com (diablo 2 section) and even the faq's and file listings on the battle.netr website. I know the files exist around there somewhere, I just dont have time to look them up right now.
Good luck...

Thanks, but I'm looking for a solution that will bring back my character.
There's no reason I should have lost it that I can figure. And why would all its characteristics and spell points be halved??!!?? It doesn't make sense.
I don't really mind the points, because now I can redistribute them like crazy, but I had quite possibly the best items in the game (just as an example, in Hell level [-50 % resistances] I had two with 39 %, with the others at around 70%...pretty sweet). I was stacked HUGE. I mean, I would do the Hell final level and make Iron Golems out of F*cking MAGE PLATES just for something to do. Dammit.
Dammit. Anyone else seen this problem, or have any ideas? I don't want to open the game again until I know what I have to do.........

The only time I've had something similar happen to me was when I over-hacked a character... which I didn't really care about, since all my serious characters are on realms, where stuff like this just can't happen...
Sorry man I feel your pain!

Sigh.
Dammit.

Check out diabloii.net, the place to go for your diablo woes and stuff. One thing to do right away make a backup of your save folder. It's not going to fix your problem, but at least you can't do more harm by opening up the app. Also, to my knowledge the prefs file does not affect your characters. Only the four types of files for each charcter name in your save folder do. I have also encountered this problem when i over hacked a character. good luck.

Well, I WAS backing up....that's the problem. My backup doesn't work......

I know the prefs don't affect the character. The only handle the games' settings, not the actual character data.

I can tell you how EXACTLY that happened. Only the gods know why, but it seems the entire nation of Korea is on Diablo II and decided to make gaming a living hell for everyone on there.
Due to the extaordinary amount of hacking going around (called "korean" characters) people were getting killed IN TOWN, losing money, getting items stolen without even trading, a bunch of other stuff.
Blizzard had a big character roleback. Not sure how they decided who got rolledback, but a crap load of characters got set back to a previous state. Hecne, your level 53 getting sent back to level 26 and you regaining your points to distribute.
Blame the majority of the problems on most of the Korean players. But I found that doesn't do much because they log onto normal level games with their level 80 barbarians and go around killing everyone and saying,"kakaka"
Speaking of which, WTF does that even mean?

I had a similar problem, I was downgrading to 1.03c from 1.04 because for some unknown reason. D2 always froze when I was in the Viper Temple in Act 2. But it worked in 1.03. I don't know what is wrong for you but maybe your versions before and after aren't the same. I recommend reinstalling the same version you were using before the transfer.

I had a Level 58 Amazon HardCore on USEast realm who was and is alive before I quit Dialbo 2 so I may have some grounds to talk here. I think the original poster's problem is local to the machine he's using. The rollback did not affect non b-net realm characters.
As far as the Koreans thing. I ran into quite a few of those players online but most of them were not Korean, just punk kids pretending to be. Most of the people in USEast in hardcore that like to kill other people don't make it past lvl 40 and those that do don't act like "Koreans." I wouldn't attribute stupidity to a nationality. The reason why bnet is all hacked up by "Koreans" can be explained if you replace the word "Korean" with "idiot with nothing better to do"
Stoner
P.S. My amazon's name was Ima_Fletcher and as far as I know she's still alive.

Well, Blizzard Tech support didn't even know what to do, so finally I just trashed my old prefs, reinstalled the entire game, updated to 1.0.5, and stuck the Save folder in there.
It worked. Don't know why, don't know how. Something must have gotten corrupted along the way, that's all I can figure.....
