Ok, Q3 is really easy to tweak, but I haven't really found any good tweaks in UT yet. Let's share our secrets. Me? I don't have any. So UT runs kinda slow, but good enough. How can I improve it?

Ca$h -

Last i checked you and i were running virtually the same setup (Rev A/D iMac w/V2 and 192RAM) so here's what worked for me...

Check out Planet Unreal and check out their tips, tricks, and .ini files:
http://planetunreal.com/osx/

Just disabling all the eye-candy on my machine garnered avg mid-high 20's fps @ 800x600 on my Grape.

Heh, Yeah, I saw your FPS scores at Xlr8yourmac.com.

Oh yeah, one thing... I tweaked UT a while ago, but ... Id unno, I was getting like high 20s to lower 30s..... >shrug<

Anyway, I'll look around there.

Check out this link for UT .ini files with comments. It's a good guide for tweaking and such:
http://www.planetunreal.com/osx/help.html

And some more stuff on optimizing at the same place:
http://www.planetunreal.com/osx/pages/optimizing.html

I've found the best way to tweak UT is to trash it and play Quake 3 But if that's not an option then just tweak those .ini files until it's reasonably fast.

What graphics card are you running? While it may be possible that higher end (G4 or Rage128) cards run Q3A better than UT (due to OpenGL vs. Glide) everything i've experienced on my iMac v2 machine tells me that UT runs significantly smoother than Q3A. This even in the face of the a 333mHz machine and the popular statement than UT is more CPU-intensive than Q3A.

This sucks. I spent like half an hour tweaking my ini file and stuff, (Both of them) and I LOST 1.2 fps in timedemos. :| Screw it. I need a faster CPU. >

Good god you're a ****ing *********. I hope this is a joke.

HEY MORON. MACSOFT DIDNT MAKE UNREALTOURNAMENT FOR MAC! WESTLAKE STUDIOS DID!

****ing nimrod.

Anyway, same thing with driver. Macsoft is just the company that boxes it up and stuff, it was ported by some entirely different company, and they were almost a YEAR late......

I think you should all shut up. It's just a game for the gods' sake. If you want them so bad, go buy a Playstation or a PC and stop ranting over here.

Hmmm. Is it that time of month again?

The two games weren't ported or made by the same companies. And let's try to keep the irritability to a minumum here...please and thanks.

What kind of FPS are you expecting vs getting?

25fps average in a multiplayer, online game of UT running @ 800x600, med tex/details, 16bit (course), all eye-candy off for a machine now nearly 3 years old and originally dismissed as totally unupgradeable is pretty darn acceptable if you ask me. And looking at the FPS for newer/2nd gen iMac systems makes me like my "outdated" Mac even more.

Frankly, i forsee 4-8 months from now being a really good time for Mac gamers to invest in a new machine.

Maybe i'll post back later with the optimized .ini file i'm using on my iMac.

HA! I never said a new computer. New CPU. CPU=central processing unit. Aka IFORCE! I want a 500mhz G3 so bad. Wanna OC it to like 533-566ish. >

PS: I'm impressed as well. My 333mhz/8meg voodoo2 holds its own against P2450/16meg Voodoo2

My system:

G4 400
Radeon
384MB RAM, 200MB allocated to both UT and Quake 3
OS 9.1

I find that Quake is far smoother than UT, and I get much higher framerates in Quake 3. I like UT very much, but I find that I play Quake 3 more often because of it's superior game engine. UT is just too clunky and slow compared to Quake

Based on benchmarks at xlr8yourmac.com, Glide doesn't do it for UT, either. A Radeon running UT in RAVE is only a couple fps slower than a Voodoo 5 running UT in Glide...not enough of a difference to be noticeable. ATI is releasing a performance update for the Radeon very soon, so this should put the Radeon ahead of the Voodoo 5 for UT performance.

I suspect that the reason for this is Id's support fo the Mac platform. Id writes their own Mac version of Quake, so its better optimized for the Mac. UT is ported to the mac by westlake interactive, so the code isn't as well optimized for the mac. Also, UT's game engine isn't as advanced as Quake 3's. Unreal 2 might fix this, but I'm not counting on it. "Cliffy B" and the boys just don't have the programming skills to compete with the almighty John Carmack of Id (and Graeme Devine is a Mac loyalist, although both Carmack and Devine LOVE OS X).

Once Quake is altivec enabled (any day now), it will be so much faster than UT...what a joke.

Sorry dude, you're just plain wrong. :| That simple. Glide is AWESOME with UT. The whole engine is pretty much optimized to use 3dfx cards. Why? When it was created, 3dfx was THE card. It is an old game engine, you're right on that..... and Q3 is a fairly new engine, right on that too. But look at the advantages. UT= old, so it hauls ass on the newest systems with a glide card. The only reason that Q3 seems so much better to you is because of ONE thing.

Radeon.

Here's what I would suggest. You have a tower. Sooooo. Go out and purchase a USED voodoo3. You can get them pretty cheap. Then start up UT. You'll be AMAZED.

Ca$h

PS: What res do you run UT at? That could be another prob. UT really really likes fast CPUs as well, and 400mhz isn't that quick..so....yeah.

I reckon it's just weird how very different the reports are, for me UT runs a lot smoother on a pb g3/333, and it looks great too, whereas q3 even with everything off/low runs crap...strange

Its due to your video card. If you have an ATI Card, you will find that Q3 runs better.

If you have a glide card, you will find that UT runs better.

Laptops are excluded, because their video cards suck so bad, that they run the OLDER games better (less requirements, less strenuous). (thats why you like UT)
