So what's the deal with the blanket statement that the OSX Unreal Tournament will "never" support any video modes besides OpenGL?

They arent going to support anything besides Open GL because it is only a Mac os x port, glide wont be supported because there are no voodoo drivers, and rave isnt that good. Plus, when you dont have to worry about memory usage and os x can run opengl very well, you don't need anything else.

checked out the readme:

"- UT X only supports OpenGL rendering. Software rendering may be supported at some point, Rave and Glide will never be."

so, from xyber's comment i can just assume that UT's OpenGL hasn't been optimized. I hope this is the case, because glide and rave in 9.x performed WAY above the OSX OpenGL performance I'm getting. knowing it will get better will make me a happy guy :c)

Don't worry, its only a beta . There are so many bugs to fix. It isnt even optimized yet. Think of this UT beta as 10.0.4 and the final as 10.1 hehe .

Wouldn't that put it at 6 o'clock on the wheel of time?

UT OpenGL hasn't yet been optimized; as a matter of fact, I think it's still the same code that's in the OS 9 version. So yes, it's slow, and yes, it's buggy. But you should be thankful you can play it at all! Most of us can't get past the loading screen!

But look for it to improve greatly in the future; this is, as someone else said, just a beta. (And barely even that.)

I'm confused, I thought OpenGL was the only 3D API supported in MacOS X. Why would Westlake support RAVE and GLIDE in a port for MacOS X, if MacOS X does not support RAVE and GLIDE.

I haven't tried the beta yet since I don't have MacOS 10.1 yet. I was also hoping Westlake would have a new beta out soon to fix some of the problems.

You're right, they aren't supporting Glide and RAVE, only OpenGL. And yes, it's because OS X doesn't support either Glide or RAVE.

Westlake isnt supporting Glide or Rave in OS X. It is not even going to be an option in the video panel. Only OpenGL and maybe software rendering

there's no point in asking, rave and glide suck anyway. why would you want to use them when you have nice pretty opengl?

Well, in the case of Unreal Tournament, RAVE is faster and Glide is prettier AND faster. And they're both a far sight less buggy than OpenGL. And you don't need to devote as much RAM to the app, also keeping in mind system OpenGL usage stats, and....the list goes on. For just about any other game, though, OpenGL is the way to go.
