I'm looking to get a good FPS to hold me over for a while. I'm kind of sick of the whole "arena" thing and I want some missions to complete... Which one of these games will give me my best bang for my buck...

Red Faction? How is this? Good? How is the single player?

Aliens vs. Predator? This looks cool. I like the Aliens motif. Isn't it cheap?

Wolfenstien? This looks cool... when does it come out now?

Anything else I should be thinking about? I want good levels to complete. Missions, not bots.

How will these games run on a Rev A Titanium G4 400? (384 RAM and the old 8meg video card) Can it handle Wolfenstien?

Wolfenstein should run fine on your computer. I'm not sure about the others though. I tried the MP test on my 667 and it ran beautifully. On my friends iBook 466 it ran okay, so you should be alright.

Paradoxically, I think the multiplayer modes in Wolfenstein have a very satisfying 'mission' feel to them - evolution has taken this game far from the average deathmatch 'arena'.

Most reviews of Wolfenstein I've seen have regarded the single player campaign as rather lame, but the critics and I agree that the online part really shines. Interestingly, they were created by two different companies, Nerve Software and Gray Matter Studios, respectively.

So it depends on how much you value the multiplayer side of things. If you have absolutely no interest for online play, then Wolfenstein might not be the best one out there. (My recollection of reviews talking here.)

But if you have even the slightest itching for the dramatics and intensity of 'team' online gaming, then go for it - get the demo if you haven't already.

red faction - awesome single player, so-so multi. the potential of the geo-mod engine (allows for you to blow holes in most parts of wall with big weapons) is very high. game does a fairly good job of implementing it. single player allows you to not only run around and shoot ppl but also take over huge vehicles, such as mine digger (dig ur way through walls) and sub (torpedo the stalagmites so they fall on your enemies).
multiplayer is a little weak, however. the feel of the game is still not as good as quake 3 imho.
will prolly run poorly on your machine tho b/c of high processor load when you blow away wall.

avp - havent played single player, but multi is way fun. humans are boring, but playing as alien is totally awesome. climb ceilings, use night vision, the works. awesome when a human goes into the room directly below you and you drop on him.
based on quake 2 engine so it should run fast on your machine.

wolf - single player is a lil weak, but multi is pretty cool. graphics are pretty awesome b/c its based on quake 3 engine.
will run ok on your machine.

i have tested all these games with beige g3/266/640mbram/radeon and ibook/500/384mbram

edit: red faction

I know it wasn't on your list, but have you played/considered Voyager
Elite Force?

Elite Force is a decent game that is reasonbly priced ($19 at
CompUSA) and runs well on under OS X on my G4/400.

I bought it last week and I've found it to be reasonably fun. If you are
after story its not as good as Half-Life or Marathon, but its on par with
other FPS such as Shogo or Opposing Force.

Shogo is another decent FPS. Its a bit old (98 or 99 I think) but I think
that SmallDog might still have a few copies. I bought it at Christmas
and really liked it. The story had a several funny anime style "twists".

My brother played Red Faction and RTCW recently and he didn't really
like either one. He said that RF has a good engine but a really weak
story and was too short. He had mixed feelings about RTCW, he
didn't like some parts of the single player but he loved other parts. I
played the first two levels of single player, and I'm probably going to
buy it when it comes out.

Don't bother with wolfenstien, it barely runs singleplayer on a p3 equvelant to a 667 with a radeon, and your 400mhz with rage 128 certinly wont cut it. Maybe for multiplayer with one other person... but, you know. You could buy it, but I almost garentuee that you will be very dissapointed that you can't play it. Get AVP, it is the one that will be able to run decently on your titanium.

Some RTCW thoughts...

I've been playing the multiplayer part of the game only, and I REALLY enjoy it (full game on a PC). I tried Quake multiplayer, but I found that it was no fun after 10 mins...just gets boring. But in RTCW, there is much more team play and the respawn rules make it much more interesting. The levels are also pretty nice, & new maps are being created on a regular basis. My brother seems to really enjoy the single player...I haven't tried it yet (no time).

Unfortunatly, I also have a Ti500 (used to be 400, we sent it to Apple to check the DVD player which was making a lot of noise, and it came back a 500 ...don't ask ), and the OSX demo runs like crap...unless I put it at 16bit instead of 32, but the image looks really bad...mb it will get better in the final release, dunno. If you only have a Ti...don't get it...IMHO.

Have fun !

RtCW will look crappy w/ that 8 meg vid card if it will even run. Also, the reqs that IMG posted said it needed at least a 450 Mhz G4. I'd imagine anything slower and it'll look pretty unpretty.

I haven't tried it yet, maybe other people have experience otherwise. I'm hoping so because I have a G4 400.
