Hey,
I have a question for everyone. I came across a bunch of old games in my closet and managed to put them on my PB500. However, alot of the old games are unplayable because my cpu is TOO fast.

Any ideas on how I can remedy this?? I HAVE to play Pirates! Gold again!!

I've tried using "MacSnail", but my PB won't let me turn it on!! It shuts it off automatically

Suggestions??? THANKS!!!

try boosting vm to it's limit, works every time for me, the computer takes 10 min. just to open the finder!

By the way,...

Any way to make Radical Castle run on an iMacDV?

What year are these games from? Because there are emulators out there which allow your new computer to run games meant for Apple II's and really old Macs, I'm pretty sure.

Blizzard.

Maybe if you run SoftMac (thats the name of the mac emulator right?) under Virtual PC will do the trick... I believe there is some program that allows you to allocate cpu usage, check versiontracker, just give the finder like 90% of the cpu or something...

I'm not sure of the year. I used to run these games (Pirates! Gold, original Marathon, Pathways into Darkness, Spectre) on my old Performa. Now that I have a PB 500, they run too quickly for me to respond...

I don't think I need an emulator... do I? They run on my Mac as-is. I have virtual pc 4.0, but have never heard of virtualmac.

The energy saver CP in OS9.1 has the option to reduce processor speed. I have a Powerbook G3 400 (FW) and it has this option.

You can always download and run vMac ( www.vmac.org ) for Mac OS. It emulates a Mac Plus and runs every system up to 7.5.5 (although you'll need to find yourself a ROM).

I use it whenever I come across an ancient program that will no longer run

Keston,

Do you mean turning on processor cycling? That only cuts 25% power - still too fast...

I have OS 9.1 and I can't find a way to manually adjust the speed. Can you email me your control panel? he he

I mean in ADDITION to processor cycling.

-Allow processor cycling
-Reduce processor speed
-turn off display instead of dim

Something like that. Everything becomes unbearably slow when i click it. As in click a menu now, watch it happen 5 secons later kinda thing.

Andy,
You should try the vmac emulator. See above for URL

It works well. I want to run mine in color...

there is a cache switch that comes with old OS7.0-7.1
Since you have a non-power mac if you can find this control panel and set it to more compatible and it makes everything slower. Otherwise, do what i do and play them on a Powerbook 100. You need a slower system to play Sky Shadow and Crystal Quest.

Here's a suggestion - deactivate your L2 cache. Go to:
http://www.powerlogix.com/

and download Cache Profiler. Using this, you can completely disable your backside cache.

HTH.

EDIT: I just tried disabling my L2 cache. It cut my performance in half, literally. I went from a score of 5.21 to 2.57. Pretty amazing...

Try Peek-A-Boo http://www.clarkwoodsoftware.com/peekaboo/

This allows you to prioritize cpu allocation as little or as much as you want to any application or background task. It's safe and seems to work well.

Instead of www.vmac.org, try downloading vMac from here: You get a newer version of vMac which supports sound and is Carbonized for Mac OS X. It seems to run most World Builder games okay, including Radical Castle.

Nah, it wasn't that hard because it was a WB game. You could just open it with World Builder (ResEdit also worked if you didn't have WB) and look at all the code.

Yes, I know that's cheating
