I installed Quicktime 5, but got the "con't find" problem at startup. I uninstalled it, but couldn't wait to install it again so I just reinstalled Quicktime 4.1.1 to play DiabloII.

However, Diablo wouldn't recognize my video card - it would only run in software mode!!!!! I then reinstalled Quicktime 5, and now it recognizes OpenGL as well - but it will hard crash as soon as I try and pick an option from the main menu!!!!

Strange...

I installed QT5 the day it was released, amd Diablo II still allows me access to software, OpenGL and RAVE. And it doesn't crash when I use the menus.

Perhaps you should try trashing your QT prefs?

Well, this is interesting. i uninstalled 5, and reinstalled 4. This time, I couldn't even start up - I'd boot to the Finder, then a floater message would pop up - except it was all weird characters. Then I'd hard crash. I finally found out that the uninstall didn't remove the new Soundmanager, and it and the older one were fighting.

However, DII still won't recognize anything but software mode with Quicktime 4. Strange...UT runs fine......

Have you told D2 to rescan the monitors? It needs to do that in instances like this...
It's a bevel button on the bottom of the options screen.

Yep, rescan only produces the same option - Software.

I reinstalled DII after backing up my character. Same result.

I have a G4/400 with a Rage129 Pro. However, the old bug that DII had was that on Rage128 (not Pro) machines, you could only select software mode. There was a patch to fix this, I think..... I wonder if that has anything to do with it?????

Oh... have you connected to Battle.net and updated to version 1.03c? That will fix the problem if you haven't...

I always play on the Realms, so I always have the most recent version, but I suppose some people prefer single player and sometimes miss patches...

Yep, it was 1.03c, but didn't work. Now my version is the original.

The thing is, that SHOULDN'T matter, since that update was only for Rage128 cards on G3/earlyG4 models. I have a Pro on the new G4, soooooo......

Ok...an update....

Now Unreal Tournament isn'r working. I played a game under Quicktime 5, but now that I'm back in 4 it only uses software mode as well.

Blizzard Mac tech support emailed that
"The only part of Quicktime that could be affecting Diablo II is the sound
manager library. Boot up the computer with no extensions (hold shift) and manually remove ALL Quicktime extensions from your extensions folder (refer to the installer log Quicktime creates during install). Reboot and reinstall Quicktime."

So, Sound manager??? I guess it's the old thing all over again.......
