At Comdex today, Nvidia has offered some details about its new laptop graphics chip, the Geforce2go, which Toshiba will use in its laptops starting in the spring. "The Geforce2go offers much of the performance of Nvidia's desktop PC chips while consuming a fraction of the power," according to Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO, in an interview with CNet. The article also opens the door for an Nvidia OEM announcement at Macworld Expo San Francisco from Apple CEO Steve Jobs:

"Huang said the next news that people hear about Nvidia in the Mac market will likely come from Apple chief executive Steve Jobs. Rival ATI raised Jobs' rancor earlier this year when it prematurely said that its chips would be part of iMacs and PowerMacs that had not yet been introduced."

bring on the Geforces at all levels. i cancelled my Radeon order when i heard that Nvidia was looking for a Mac QA technician - if that's not a product announcement, i don't know what is. It'll be nice to know that when an NV15 or NV20 for Mac is announced, it's not going to be reliably late as has been the trend with ATI. they would have had a customer here, but they were 2 months late - again.

thank you Nvidia. i'm waiting with cheque in hand.

NVidia rules!! Can't wait for any announcement from them too! I really need to upgrade, and I've been thinking about the Radeon, but if nVidia has something in the works I would rather give them my business too. Can anyone say "Detonator 3"?

Can you say "Sometime next year" and "mid-range products only". I wouldn't be holding my breath on nVidia, as they may be looking at the Mac, but until its announces, its just speculation and R&D (just like all the OSX on Intel crap. Apple might be seeing if it can be done, but that doesn't mean we'll see it). As for their cards, they won't bother with the high-end ones, as the Mac can't use them to their full potential, and what idiot is going to buy a high-end $300 card if the mid-range card costs half as much and performs nearly as well (the same goes with the VooDoo4/5 cards, BTW). And the cost will be higher than the PC cards (not sure why, but they all are).

And of course it won't be "reliably" late. They won't announce it until its ready. (But that's easy for them, because they're not facing a public outcry over no upgrades in a while, like ATI or 3dfx). But who knows when that will be (oh sure, the rumors are saying MWSF, but I believe they were also saying MWNY and MW-Paris and probably 18 other places).

Oh sure, just like all the other "super" cards, do you really think this new entry will be any better than the last two from 3dfx and ATI? My prediction is that we will get yet another lame entry targeted to the average Mac, not the high performance models so easily gotten in the PC world.
Of course, one can only hope, but I think until Apple actually redesigns their wimpy motherboards we're not going to see any massive jumps in performance. Like many others I am holding off my previously bi-annual Mac hardware purchases until this happens.

Which nVidia cards make it to the Mac is less important than the fact that nVidia is coming to the Mac in the first place.

nVidia is a very high profile product among PC users. Just the fact that Macs now have ATi, 3dfx and nVidia cards will turn some heads.

We should be very happy, because PC users are running out of excuses and amunition against Macs. By mid-2001, Macs will have a superior OS, with an abundance of powerful retail and open source apps ported from unix & linux, 3D cards by ATI, 3dfx, nVidia and Formac, the latest A-title games, low cost hardware, quality and industrial design.

Apple will need to upgrade to 133Mhz buses and DDR-RAM in order to improve their sales, and that's why I believe we will see these innovations soon. I think the current RAM rebate is a move to clear 100Mhz RAM from inventory to allow room for the 133mhz DDR RAM. With this, nVidia could offer their full range of 3D cards to Mac.

So, be merry!

Amen! I'm not a mac user at this moment, but OSX is making me consider getting a mac next year. If Apple comes out with 133mhz FSB, DDR RAM and NVidia graphics cards, I'll definitely get go ahead and get myself one.
