come on! No mention of the almighty Aperion? The brains over at Ambrosia took centipede and fed the little booger a spoonfull of insanity. Very addictive!

Chris only covered 5 games in this article for the sake of avoiding the article becoming a long-winded and never-ending guide to all things shareware. Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised to see a sequel in the future covering additional shareware games. :-)

One of my favorite shareware titles is Bedlam 2 from Ground Zero Software, the best implementation of "Space Invaders" I've ever played on the Mac.

I have always enjoyed MacSki, by the now defunct Storm Impact.

i don't generally think of ambrosia as a real shareware maker any more. i mean, sure you can play the game before you buy it, and there's usually some feature[s] not included. but the rest of the gaming industry calls that a demo, and i'd tend to agree with them. the term 'shareware' seems to typecast games as no-budget, graphics drawn during a bus-ride, no expectations cause the d/l size is only 300k. somewhere between tanksplatter and gunshy. amusing, and they stay on your hard drive because they take up so little space, but rarely games you're hooked on because they aren't much to look at, so gameplay has to do an awful lot of work to make up for it.
one game I can consistently sit down and play is Snoods. and it's even better if your computer is used by more than one person. your score just got bumped from #1 to #3 on 'evil'? time to log some quality time deposing whoever gave you the nudge. again, nothing stunning about the graphics, but super-addictive.

Snoods rocks, I have it on my HD right now. But my favorite shareware game, (it's why I have a mac, I played it on my cousin's and i was hooked), is Darkwood, and Seige of Darkwood. I don't know why, but they're really fun. After those two I like Asterax. I don't normally go in for asteroids type games but this one does a good job.

And, I dont think of Ambrosia as shareware either. Most shareware authors don't have booths at Macworld.
