I downloaded the Cro-Mag demo yesterday night to see what the hype was about. I didn't open it, preferring to wait after I got home from school....
So I get home, and it turns out my little sister had saw it and played a few games. I get into it, realize I want to try the MacAlly iShock controller, and so restart my computer with more extensions on.
But when I go to play, it tells me the time has run out!!!! 45 minutes???? That's peanuts!!! Trashing the prefs do no good, so I deleted that copy and downloaded a new one. It won't work either, so thre must be some file it stuck somewhere.
Anyone have any suggestions???? I need to pla the demo before buy the game, obviously.............

Greetings,
This one is easy. Look for and trash a file called Shabang in your prefs folder. This is where all the launch and time counts are retained.
By the way, do think that the controls are too sensitive? That little bugger goes all over the place.

Ha.....I found it about 5 minutes after I posted, but had to take off for school....
Yes, it IS very sensitive, and I spin out fast. It's like you just turn and the thing whips all over the place.
As well, I don't like what happens when you hit a grease patch or whatever - instead of just sliding, you go all over the place. Even if you hit it slow it still happens.....
I think it might be the tracks...they're very twisting and bumpy, so I senc half my time in the air and spin out a lot.
Overall, though, it's a fun game to play...it IS cool. Too bad the controls get me frustrated sometimes....

Turning is easy! All you have to do is let go of the accel. as you turn. There was no problem for me!

...but go over a bump at the same time and it goes all to hell. I don't know...on open levels like Stonehenge it's all right, but get going on something really twisting like the single-player ones and it sux....

i went to dowload the demo of cro-mag rally off the link on this site, and my download manager told me it would take 2hrs, 32 mins...is that right? i cancelled the dowload and tried again later , and the same results. i'm using a 56k modem and an imac 350mhz. it just seems a little long to only be able to use for 45 mins.

Greetings,
As for the download, it is a 40 MB file so you'll have to decide whether it is worth it. You could always wait to purchase the retail version, but I would recommend trying it before you buy. The controls are really sensitive and you might wish you hadn't bought it.
I have a feeling that a lot of kids will want to play this game and will be very frustrated when they find out that one tap on either turn key sends their car careening up a hilside. I like the idea of the game and I see the potential, but playing single player with a keyboard just makes me #%&^@. A network game might be better because each player is real and not computer controled. Or maybe one needs to buy one of those steering wheel devices.

Like was posted above, suprz, trashing the Cro-Mag preferences and the file "Shabang" beside it will remove the time limit, although you'll have to redo all your settings. Actually, I never thought of just deleting Shabang - would that just remove the time limit, I wonder....????
Yes, it is a rather large demo for 45 mins of play. 2 days would definitely have been better for people to get a feel for the game and decide whether they liked it or not....
While it is a rather fun game, it doesn't have the playability of, say, Mario Kart. It's just not so easy to control or to have general fun, and there's a limited number of things to do (ie. only throw things front or back, no jumping or other creative options that could've enhanced the gameplay). Plus, there's less a sense of "racing" than in Mario Kart, which was the fun reason to play it...beating the other guy around the corner is where the satisfaction is....
It is a rather good concept, and probably will be popular, but it could have definitely been a much better game.... I'll buy it anyway, though...Pangea and Ambrosia are probably the last great "underground" game developers, with Pangea taking the cake for graphics and Ambrosia for gameplay.
A merger would be interesting....

Well, I'm having a blast with this game, playing the single player tournament (on the Easy setting, I should mention). I do get a sense that I'm racing and beating guys around the corner. I've never played Mario Kart, so I'm not really sure how jumping and other "creative" options would add to the sense of racing -- my father was a race car driver and I don't remember his car having a Jump button .
I didn't have any trouble getting used to the keyboard controls, but it does take some time to get to know the tracks. It seems like the computer opponents already know them, so it takes some practice to get the cornering right and to use the rough terrain to your advantage, so you don't go careening out of control all the time. There are only 9 tracks in the single player so you can't expect it to be too simple or you'd hardly get your $40 worth.
The first track (Crete) of the second tournament (Bronze Age) is much more wide open, and the most fun by far, than any of the tracks in the first tournament or the next two tracks. It's definitely my favorite -- I took first place on my second try, using one of the better cars that becomes available after you win the first tournament.
Right now I'm totally stuck on the second track of the Bronze Age tournament, the Great Wall -- it's a killer, with lots of 90 degree turns, dog legs, and hairpin turns. I'm starting to swear like a real race car driver and sometimes I wish I could get out of my car and punch out one of the other drivers .

I actually can't remember if Mario kart HAD jump or not -I just meant it for Cro-Mag. No, it ISN'T a real race game, and therefore I wouldn't expect it to act like one. I was just talking about options that might make the game more fun, and since it has a definite cartoonish feel I figured that would add an interesting element.
I don't know...my bro and I play head-to-head on the same computer, but we both get tired of it very easily...like I said, the feeling of actually racing each other (not pro racing, but that FEELING of wanting to realy beat the other guy) is somewhat missing.
However, I do like playing it, and kudos to Pangea for creating another great game. This is definitely a must-have bundle for all the new Macs.....
