I am trying to play Quake 3 on Mac OS X.

I downloaded the q3 app from Omni and I extracted it.

Then I started up OS X. I opened the Omni Q3 app, selected my full install folder of Mac Quake 3.

Then it changes the resolution and what not.

Then it goes to a black screen.

The mouse is there and working…

I have a Dual G4/450 with the BTO Radeon.

Any ideas?

I have the same problem man. Dual G4/450 with Radeon. From what I understand those lameos at ATI haven't provided RAVE or OpenGL drivers for MacOS X in regards to the Radeon.

I hope I am wrong though - though I doubt it.

I've got exactly the same prob on my Rev C iMac Rage Pro 6MB.
I've been told (in these forums) you need to set the correct screen resoloution & bit depth in OS 9 (why I dont know as these are Carbon, not classic games, but all I know is you must do this before you start up OSX) but this did not work for me, as far as I can tell the game simply will/does not work (I know one person who supposedly got the game working).
This also goes for 4X4 Evoloution.
The guys that test or certify these games as carbon compatible must be using later develpoer/beta versions of OSX.
I have heeard conflicting reports about Radeon support in OSX all from ATI (Duh!) they have stated that the Radeon will work with OSX and does & does not (in seperate press releases) support 2D/3D acceleration, go figure.
But I agree with you about ATI's drivers probably being at fault, those guys just don't give a F**K about drivers/software.
ATI, don't just make it work, eventualy, (like six months latter or something, aka Rage Pro 128, did you take the piss then or what!) but make them work GREAT.
If ATI f***s up 2D/3D accleration in OSX (or merely makes it "work") I'm never going to buy or use an ATI product ever again, & I might just get a contract out on the head of the guy who's responsible for ( the lack of) Mac development.
Me , + ATI, = Grrrrrrrr
P.S I know the Radeon's a good step in the right direction, that is it will be when we get "OPTIMISED" drivers for it... (& at least the option of a bit more Ram/comparable PC side spec).
Come on Nvidia, push these lazy f*****s all the way.
PPS has anyone tried CroMag under OSX yet?
And whats with that big black border around the f****n game window!?@*
I wanna see the WHOLE game in the WHOLE of my monitors display OK BG! (If this issue only applies to Macs that use the "old" Rage Pro like th one in my Rev C iMac, this is acceptable, otherwise your taking the piss + I'll be game tester/designer for you, as the one you currently use hasn't got a clue, the game is fun as oppossed to being great becuase of the stupid physics/dynamics/contolability of those stone age hot rods.
Jeez, why bother making such a potentialy great little game & then killing it with crap in game control dynamics.

Radeon OpenGL problems == lack of drivers.

Plain and simple.

I have the Dual G4/500 with BTO Radeon as well and anything that tries accessing OpenGL switches to software mode. So why doesn't Q3 run? Q3 demands hardware acceleration and will NOT run with OpenGL in software mode. Fortunately, I have a second video card, ATI's VR 128. I have tested Q3 and other OpenGL apps with the VR 128 and everything works perfectly fine! Don't worry, Radeon drivers should be released for OS X in the next month or two...

I have had that same problem with my rev. D iMac, or at least a similar one. I changed all of the settings on both the OS 9 side and the OS X side, but I still get the same "Cannot find proper resolution" or something to that effect. I want Q3 for OS X to see if it really does speed it up. 20% would mean 4 more fps for me .
