I just got Baldur's Gate and in the install book, it says there should be several options for installing it (including a 3 gig, full install). Right now, I'm fortunate enough to have that kind of room. But when I actually run the game, it only gives me an Easy or Minimum install. The easy install is only around 350 Meg and I still have to use the CD. Am I missing something? Is the book misleading? Any help would be great!

Unfortunately, you've experienced the first of the many disapointments GraphSim has foisted upon us with their port of BG. They promised a full install and never delivered. They also promised a version on DVD for those ofus with DVD drives so you wouldn't have to switch CDs. Never happened. And don't get me started on the expansion pack that's been in the works for almost as long as BG itself!

Don't get me wrong; if you like RPGs based on D&D, this is the best you'll find. Be sure to download the patch to help with stability.

As for a full install, you simply need to do a 'Easy' install and then copy over all of the files in the movies and data folders on each CD. Don't worry if you Mac tells you there are files with the same name--you can overwrite them. They're just the same files duplicated on each CD. Once that's done, you should have a full install!

Oi!

What ever happened to the multi-player patch? I haven't heard about the status of that one in ages. Is it supposed to come out with the Sword Coast expansion pack? This is something I'd like games.macnn.com to look into...

Cheers,
Grifter

Personally I'm glad to see the BG series get out of GraphSim's hands. It's distinctly possible that BG was/is a huge bitch to port and they got more than they bargained for, but the wait for the expansion and multiplayer is getting stupid. At this rate we'll see Icewind Dale and BG2 before they are done.

I'm also not pleased with BG's performance. It stutters and sputs on a 400 G3. Pretty sad for a software-based game that ran great on a P2 266 PC I first played it on....

Also regarding the "Full Install", you can cmd-tab to the finder and remove the CD (required to start) to stop the CD-Rom from spinning up periodically. Also note that the latest patch has a bug (still...) that seemingly freezes some of the movies. Just cmd-tab to finder and back and it will play normally.
