Hey,
I just wanted to let people know that the WingNuts Demo will be up on our site this afternoon. Download it and let me know what you guys think.
Freeverse is REALLY proud of this one.
http://www.freeverse.com
The game will ship in about 3 weeks, as soon as the boxes are printed.
Best,
-Colin

Boy, do I love this game! It's too bad I won't be buying it!
The game sounds are great and varied, with one notable exception: the cute asides by the stewardess and the Baron grate on one's nerves. Perhaps, if they had something to say other than repeating from a very short list, it would be interesting. Since those voices can not be turned off (I tried every sound setting available), I'm afraid that this is a no-go situation for me. I like the way the game plays, the fun graphics, the thrill of taking out the big ship at the end of the first level; but after playing the demo four times - I was done. If only you could make them shut up. It's cute to hear the Baron say, "I only want to take over the world. Is that so bad?" in his fake german accent; but it's not cute when you've heard it several times in one play of a short demo! I'd love to get him some of his beloved cheese doodles - maybe then he'd stop asking for them!
The moment Freeverse releases a patch that either allows the voices to be turned off, or dramatically increases the things they want to say, I will purchase the game.
Please understand that I'm not ranting about the whole game. There are so many aspects of this game that are delightfully done, it would be difficult to list them all. In many ways, this is the perfect arcade game. It is terribly unfortunate that the demo suffers from this fatal flaw. I suppose I could order the game, hoping that the full version fixes this design error, but it is simply too annoying to take the $25 risk.
Please... Download the demo and give the game a try. It's incredibly fun. I hope the company will fix this problem and eagerly await the day I can buy this game.

Ah. I love such hugely shortsighted opinions.
dws, have you played any of Freeverse's other games? The characters are a bit more varied in their chatter. So let's repeat after me:
This....is.....a......demo
I cannot believe you expect the full package in a demo. I mean, there aren't even targets to bomb or missiles to fire in the first level, ie you can say that 1/3 (weapons available)* 1/30 (levels available) = 1/90 of the game is to be expected in the demo.
This game is such an impressive treat. I liked it a lot, and may buy it (I think games are pretty evil for my work ethic).
My only criticism is that the interface is a little off from the style of the gameplay. The buttons are too hard and metallic.
So considering it's a demo--I give it a 97% (3% off for the interface).
Freeverse is correct in being proud of this.

I agree, the demo is fun. I also agree that the Baron dude and the others are annoying. And I agree that the fact this is a demo may have something to do with it. But Freeverse should listen to what people are saying, because this guy just said he wouldn't buy the game BASED ON THE DEMO. If the point of a demo is to get people to buy the game, then Freeverse seems to have failed in this respect. So, they should improve the demo so that other people don't find the same thing.
My opinion.

Personally, i am sick of 640x480 games. Would not let me play at any other res even though it offered a resolution picker at the start.
I'm not buying any more 640x480 games for my 17"LCD. Just looks like crap.
For a game like this i would think scaling up the playfield would be easy.

Yeah. The resolution *is* surprising. However, they do use OpenGL for the graphics, so maybe you should email them and see if 640x480 is their final answer.
