I've been playing it for the past few days and while it is addictive, it is incredibly underwhelming to the extreme.

If you liked Civ 2, you will like Civ 3. They are practically the same game. Only one is slower.

If you loved SMAC, you will be utterly dissapointed.

Remember all the cool features in SMAC?

- Highly advanced diplomacy

- Social Engineering

- Reasnably useful Espionage

- Wide range of governments

- Differing civilizations with their own inherient strengths and weaknesses.

- Reasonable corruption rate

- Stacked units

- City (Planet) busting weapons?

- Combat that didn't favor the defending pikeman over the 4 Panzers?

- Fully automated units that would do exactly what you wanted?

All gone.

Every major feature that made SMAC the more advanced of the two games (SMAC and Civ 2) is gone in Civ 3. Completely and utterly gone. If you can think of it, and you can assume that it is not there.

Imagine if OS X was SMAC, and OS XI Civ 3. In this case, OS XI would be System 7 with Carbon and an Aqua skin.

What's SMAC? I ask because I haven't played a Civ game since Clall to Power.
Actual conversation between UCLA and Stanford during a login on early Internet - U: I'm going to type an L! Did you get an L? S: I got one-one-four. L! U:Did you get the O? S: One-one-seven. U: <types G> S: The computer just crashed.

SMAC - Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

The high water mark for this type of game. Absolutely addictive in every sense. The integration of the back story made this a true classic.

I understand the excessive corruption that has caused major complaints among the PC players is due to be toned down in the upcoming patch. It was apparently put in to make it virtually impossible for anyone to conquer the entire world but turned out to be VERY unpopular. I am looking forward to this game despite reading some negative comments. The online reviewers who really love it seem to share my ideas about this type of game. I also expect the Mac version to be considerably better than the initial PC version.

The corruption problem is only one of many issues with the game.

That's because everyone has already played it before. Civ 3 = Civ 2.

I also expect the Mac version to be considerably better than the initial PC version.
Don't.

The problems are part of the fundamental game design that no code-tweaking by Westlake Interactive can fix.

I'm assuming the Mac version will have the PC patches already built in.

That would be a pretty solid assumption. We've been rolling in the patches as we get them. Some of the "fundamental" flaws I've seen reported are (believe it or not) bugs in the game itself that manifest as a bad side-effect. Alpha Centauri went through 4 patches to balance the gameplay - I expect Civ3 to be similar.

In regards to the original post, these SMAC features are in Civ3:

- Highly advanced diplomacy (I'm not sure what makes it less to the original poster than what it was in SMAC.)

- Differing civilizations with their own inherient strengths and weaknesses. (Each Civ has 2 or 3 unique items to it. The Americans get F15 jets for example. Other than that, they use similar concepts to define their uniqueness as in SMAC.)

- Combat that didn't favor the defending pikeman over the 4 Panzers?
(SMAC didn't feature pikemen or panzers, but the balance is simiilar. As in SMAC, units are also rated on their experience in combat.)

- Fully automated units that would do exactly what you wanted? (Well, they don't wash my car, but... You can additionally control some items that your workers should or should not build - something you couldn't do in SMAC.)

One of the nicest things SMAC brought to the table was the concept of borders, which are also integral to Civ3. The addition of culture in Civ3 as an influence is cool too.
