I bought Diablo II the other day and would like to avoid using the Play CD. It's noisy in my drive and I hate it when one is required to have a game CD inserted.
I did a full install as the install option, and it still asks me for that damned CD.
thanks.

Seems like I'm not the only one with a noisy play CD. Mine makes a grinding noise 9 out of 10 times I put it in my DVD drive.

I doubt you will be able to play without the cd just because of Blizzard pirating paranoia. You'll have to get used to it, it's not going away any time soon...

whoops. I didn't mean to imply that my tibook has a noisy cd drive. It doesn't, but it's just that CD-ROM's spinning like crazy make more noise than I want.
thanks for the replies. Maybe someone has a trick for sans-CD play.

You can eject the cd once the game starts playing. Once you are playing the game hit commane-M to minimize the screen. Click onto your desk top and eject the cd, as long as the game doesn't need it you should be fine.

No, you can't.
Diablo constantly loads textures into VRAM from the play disk. You will need to either keep the CD-ROM in the drive or image the CD to disk and find a no-CD patch on the Internet. While it is not illegal to run a bought program with no CD, remember that MacNN doesn't condone piracy.

and neither do I. I'm no fan of piracy. This game (part of the Battle Chest set) cost me almost $50 at WalMart (sorry IKME). Diablo II is pretty nice.

If you have a lot of disk space, try to make a disk image of your DII play CD! I think that'll be easier and legal!

You CAN eject the CD after you start up Diablo II as long as you copy over the Music file from the cd onto your harddrive. With LoD, you need to copy over the Music and the Movie file. The textures that are constantly loaded are from stored on the harddrive. If Diablo II had to pull the textures off of a CD during actual game play, performance would be worse than it already is, much worse.
There's also a way to run the game via a disk image. If you do a search of in this forum you may find an earlier post that mentions how to correctly make the disk image.

Well, the patch does work, however the only reason I own Diablo II is to play on Battle.Net, and there is no way to get around that without a CD in your drive.

Yeah, that patch actually works great on b.net, also gives you an advantage when you see the monsters on the map. There is no reason not to use it unless you are really against "cheats"..

That's awesome. Can you just install the patch, or do you also have to plug in your CD-key every time you play (or something like that)?
It got me confused with StarCraft, where I used to have a no-CD crack, but at the same time it did not allow me to play on battle.net where I played 99.9% of the time.
