is there any way to improve ping other than non-modem internet connection? I'm currently on a 56k phone modem averaging 42k
with a 308 average ping in UT.
Thanks

There are little things that you can do but they will not show drastic changes in your ping. However, let me tell you that if when you get a high speed internet connection, you will kick major butt in those FPS gamez .

Since we're on the subject of ping, can some one please tell me what the numbers are related to, i.e. what a standard "ping unit" is/means? And another thing, which is faster ping-wise, DSL or Cable? Thanks!

You could start your own server... server admins usually have a zero ping.

Other than that, it's time to get a real gamer's internet connection (Cable rules).

I have hosted my own game in UT, but no one ever comes other than my friend in town. I have noticed whenever you try to play against the server himself, you will be playing at a severe disadvantage. I just got wireless, since cable is unavailable out here in the wilds of Arizona, and that has increased my rating 100 points, but I am still not lower than most of the other players. Thanks for your replys.

A ping is simply a packet of information (much like radar) that is timed in its travels.

Lower ping = lower latency = less issue getting the game "information" to you.

Ping time is important in that the lower ping you have the quicker your game can figure out where it is in the Multiplayer portion.

It's good to sort multi-play servers by ping, that way you know where you'll be able to play at a decent frame rate.

Get rid of AOL. That usually helps.

OK, dr.dirt, I'm going to ask an very obvious question, but....
You're trying different servers aren't you?

There are thousands of servers on the Full Version. I sometimes play on my original iBook (300Mhz) in software rendering and pretty much where ever I am when I'm traveling, I can find a few servers under a 200 ping.

Just wondering .

Yes, Cake I have tried different servers. Actually I seem to get the best performance from servers that have a ping about 340 when I am on my modem (56k). When I am on my new wireless connection (256k) things have gotten better, but still not in the 2 digit range and on the wireless I get the best performance from servers that have the lowest ping. Thanks for replying. Now if I could only figure out what "netspeed" is.

The other day I was playing UT on the wireless connection when a large message came on the screen saying "your netspeed is too high-if you don't reduce it you will be booted"
