I don't know if you're trying to play on BNET or over a LAN. Can you be a bit more specific?

Ok, I'm utterly confused now. I thought you wanted to play with your friend using your cable connection. Now you say you want to do it using your modem? If you want to do it over a modem then you have to have your computer hooked up to a phone line and have your TCP/IP configured to use your modem (which I take now is configured to be used with your cable).

Sometimes you can't communicate well by typing things. If you decide to give up on here, give Blizzard a call as they are very helpful.

No need to call Blizzard.

Well, it's no surprise you can't connect to your friend's computer using a modem, because you don't have a modem hooked up! Before, you used a dial-up ISP, which had the added "benefit" (although it's not really a benefit) of being able to connect to a computer directly. Now you don't have a modem hooked up, so of course your computer's complaining it can't find a dial tone. The solution to the problem is to use Battle.net. This is a very excellent solution, though. Instead of limiting yourself to 56 Kbps, you can now transfer data in the order of 100's of Kbps. Use Battle.net.

Hope that helped.

If you want to connect using a modem (I can't see why you would...) then there are ways to accomplish that, but it will be easier and faster if you use Battle.net.

Or if you don't want to be on Battle.net you can both connect using the IPX protocol...

Metal, I think you're confused. The modem connection is a direct connection between two modems via phones - a cable modem uses traditional TV cable to connect. A cable modem isn't a phone modem, thus there is no dial tone from the phone.

You should use Battle.Net - you can't connect by modem unless you're using your old modem anymore. AOL doesn't matter, that was your ISP. A modem connection is going directly to the other person, so you don't need it to play.
