Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Steve Jobs say that the Geforce3 would be available from Apple in late-March for $600?

According to http://www.zdnet.com/gamespot/storie...690585,00.html Elsa plans to release their Gladiac 920 (Geforce3) in mid-March for $549 while Hercules will release its' 3D Prophet III card card for $529.

Did Apple simply mean that the Geforce3 would be available as part of a system for the Mac first? Or did Jobs mean that it would be available for purchase for a Macintosh first (which seems to be incorrect according to ZDnet).

Shortly following Jobs' announcement that the GeForce3 would be available on the Mac first, an NVIDIA executive stated that Apple would be "among the first, if not the first" to ship the card. The PC versions will likely ship first.

They also said that Apple has been the most agressive to get the GForce3 on their hardware.

All I can say G4 733 + GForce3 +MacOS X= <Druel>

Over at Anandtech's website there's a article about the specs on the Geforce3, http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1426 ,in the article they touch on the subject of who will be first; here is a sample of what they have to say:

"Fast forwarding to the present day, NVIDIA just recently unveiled the 'NV20' as the GeForce3 in Tokyo last week…to an all Mac audience. There was quite a bit of commotion surrounding this release simply because it is in fact the PC industry that has put NVIDIA where they are today, but there's no reason to get upset, the GeForce3 will be out for the PC at the same time if not earlier than the Mac community gets it."

Get this, some PC gamers are complaining about the Geforce3 because until games are developed for directX 8 the Geforce3 performs the same as the Geforce2 Ultra.

3D Prophet III is the name of the PC version of Nvidia Geforce3 technology, it will start shipping March 3. (www.hercules.com)

So Steve Jobs WAS right, the new card appeared first on the Mac, but will likely ship pee cee first, unless someone here gets one by March 3.

osiris, actually, there are quite a few oems that use nvidia's chips in their video card products. Based on the GeForce2, the likely oems for the GeForce3 are going to be:

Elsa, Hercules, Creative Labs, Asus, AOpen, Abit, Leadtek, Suma, MSI, Gainward, VisionTek, Aztech ... Dell is also an oem of nVidia cards, but I believe they are only sold as part of Dell's systems.

The competition among these vendors generally drops the price of nVidia-based products quite quickly. I've heard that the Mac version of the GeForce3 is not quite the same as the PC version, so this level of competition might not exist on the Mac side of things unless the oems decide to manufacture Mac versions of their cards as well.
