I downloaded it and played it this morning. (I actually just launched it and made sure everything worked ok, didn't actually play) Seems to run without a hitch as long as you've got the disc in.
If nothing else, the icon is Very cool (Zoom in to see it better)

I installed it on my G4, and.. although it's been a very very long time since I last played SC - it sure feels like SC runs a lot faster/smoother on OSX than it did on OS9.

Minimizing the window works great, and you dont get that ugly color palette shift anymore. U cna evne keep on playing in minimized window mode, its not even taking any performance hit.

I quit SC while it was in minimized mode, and it froze up my Dock and AIM. I had to force quit them to get them back. Dunno if its a one time fluke or what. I'll test it out more later.

Brown Monk, go to Version Tracker (OS X) and for today's list of files, you will find both vanilla Starcraft X and Brood War X.

I'm very excited that Blizzard (or whomever) released an update for SC on Mac OS X. I've been waiting for the longest time.

I'm away from my OS X machines at the moment, but does it require that you do the normal installation of the Classic version and then apply this over it? Or can you just use this version without installing the old version?

The reason I ask is that on one machine (my iBook), I don't have OS 9 installed at all, and to be quite honest, I really don't want to. But, I do want to install Broodwars

Both the SC and BW patches only add new files to the Starcraft Files folder. These all have (Carbon) after their name. The old versions for OS 9 are left intact.

So after an installation (just drop the unpacked files in the folder) you will have an app called "Starcraft" and an app called "Starcraft(Carbon)" in there.

Ahh yeah, this rules!! Starcraft rules! I love Blizzard!!

I hope Diablo 2 will see the same performance increase when it's released for OS X *crosses fingers*....

In a totally unrelated note...my copy of Giants: Citizen Kabuto arrived today.....this is an EXCELLENT game and is VERY, VERY funny (notice my use of caps to add emphasis)!

THANK YOU ,THANK YOU BLIZZARD!!!!! One more thing that moves me away from OS9 Broodwar runs VERY VERY smooth under OS X. I've been waiting for this and it is great to see. They were pretty quiet about this patch then surprised us with it. Very nice. Have been playing for hours. StarCraft and Broodwar are Awesome games It's nice to see them on OS X now.

Hope Blizzard will do a Cross grade so I can upgrade to the CD that has the carbon version on it so I don't have to keep installing the classic version.

Anxiously awaiting WarCraft III. Thanks Again Blizzard this is pretty much the only game I play and I'm glad to see it finally for OS X.

For LAN games, the OS X version of Starcraft only does UDP networking, since IPX is gone in OS X. The release notes indicate that a future rev of SC for OS9 and Win32 will do UDP as well. We know that this limits SC/X's LAN gaming and we're working on it.

On battle.net, SC/X can play against everyone and everything!

Rob -- I take it that you're with Blizzard?

If so, pass it on to everyone responsible for this -- You guys (and gals?) rock! I would buy some more of your products, but I've just about bought 2 of everything you have (yeah, for real ) except for the D2 expansion.... maybe I just need to buy that in celebration

Oh, for my installation problem above, I just copied my working Broodwar installation from my iMac, and followed the instructions from there.... I can now play SC on a machine that doesn't even have Classic on it now

Oh, and I noticed that it is faster/smoother... very nice to see applications that are as fast or faster than their Classic counterparts... and considering what the machine is doing, that's pretty amazing. Great job everyone!

On another note, is it safe to trash some of these files? I would like to get rid of anything that isn't needed to conserve a little bit of space

Hm... One bug with multiple monitors: It's possible to move the mouse pointer to the other screen, which sticks the game mouse to one border of the game screen (and scrolls like crazy).

Additionally... Anybody know how I could connect to fsgs? All my friends use it...

btw, Star Craft X no longer requires you to insert the physical CD, a disk image is fine, too. Very nice for my iBook

I'll second that!

Very nice to see, I remember you talking about this like a month ago, I totally didn't expect you to be done already. I was expecting end of year. I just hope that Diablo 2 is already in progress to be updated for OS X.

...all I need is working UT and Diablo 2 and bye bye OS 9, tis been nice knowing ya!

Sigh. At present OS X vs Win95 on LAN is a no-go - the WIn95 Starcraft does not have UDP support, which is all we can do on OS X on a LAN. We expect to change this (see the release notes for the patches).

"at present" the only version that the OS X version can play against on a LAN is the OS X version (running on OS X).

Just play over battle.net... as long as your router can handle multiple connections to battle.net just fine, you should have no problems.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but as it was explained to me, the machines in the game talk peer-to-peer and only use the servers for finding the game and reporting stats back. So you should be able to play over battle.net with two machines on the same lan even with a 56k modem.

I'd suspect that it'll be within the next couple of weeks...gotta keep the windoze customers happy

Anyhow, did anyone else have issues with logging onto battle.net in OS X? I tried hooking into the U.S. East server, and it told me my connection was too slow or my network had issues with handling UDP packets. But then I switched it over to U.S. West, lo and behold, it worked fine. Could someone explain this to me? I have DSL and 10/100 Ethernet in my LAN...it makes little sense.

Yeah, to put it very lightly, I'm happy SC is successfully carbonized. SC was one of the very few reasons I would ever boot into Classic. Now, if UT can get ported completely, and PS, and FCP, I'll say goodbye to Classic. No regrets either.

Installation was a breeze. Just finished a quick game of SC in OS X -- and it certainly does run much better than in 9.2.1 or Classic. First off, I noticed the cursor was a lot smoother running, as well as the graphics in-game. Glad to see Blizzard got around to this. Although, I do recommend you calibrate your monitor before playing -- I had some funky colors happening when I first tried. ::Hugs dual-800::

Bah, my em-dashes came out as question marks! What's up with that? I hate generic em-dashes (--).

this pretty cool...more and more games are kicking in x compared to 9.

one problem i've experienced with this port is that when i play single player (custom play) on a map that is intended for more than 4 people it quits on me...the system of course is not affected.

how do you guys tell if it's faster/smoother? Starcraft worked fine in OS 9 and ran as fast/slow as I wanted. Are you guys talking about the the max speed?

I would say overall smoothness, such as screen scrolling and responsiveness. It's sort of hard to explain and best experienced first hand.

I agree, and also the sound is much faster. In 9, whenever I would get a message from like Raynor or whoever, the game would pause for about a second before it "kicked in" and played the speech.

Yes you do need a cd to play it but from what I hear you can play from Disk Image now too. Cool.

??? ???
If you bought X you can get the upgrade for free, if you can't find the free upgrade just download a copy, you still need X.0 installed first anyway.

And what the hell does this have to do with Starcraft?

There was a minor boo-boo in the b.net configuration files yesterday, affecting only SC/X to my knowledge. It has been corrected.

Sorry to gate-crash but could someone tell me how to make disk images so that I don't have to use the CD everytime? I tried may times with Disk Copy but I haven't been successful.

Oh, and yes, I have legitimate copies of both Star Craft and Brood War

Starcraft / BroodWar on OSX is a sold two-thumbs up! Hell, it's all ten thumbs up!

I have to agree, it plays a lot smoother in OSX. I don't know if there is a way to quantify it, but qualitatively it has a lot better, smoother 'feel'.

Not to mention, you can shrink the game window and actually surf the web or do something else at the same time without so much as a millisecond pause in the game or OSX.

Folks, this is what OS multi-tasking is all about! I'm genuinely happy as a clam.

Now we just need Diablo II & LOD on OSX.
