Hey all,

Anyone know what the deal is with the artifact "Wirt's leg"?
Apparently combining this with a tomb of town portal opens a gate to a secret level.
When attempting the transmuting process, I get the response "I can't do that yet"
So I'm guessing that I've got the process correct, just not the timing.

Can anyone assist with further info?

Regards,
Stu.

You have to defeat Diablo before you can get to the secret cow level. And you can only go once per level (normal, nightmare, hell).

I'd recommend going thru Nightmare completely (defeating Diablo) before attempting the Normal cow level. It's hard and there are a lot of cows!

Good luck!

Yeah, you can beat the cows before then. I would recommend you adventure a little bit on nightmare level, get your gear up there a bit, but I beat the cow level way before beating Diablo on nightmare.

What you have to know is that they're are packed in like sardines, and if you run any direction, you'll just get a whole ton more. So go in and move just a little to bring a few to you, and then waste 'em. Rinse and repeat.

I can't really remember, but don't you also have to be in Rogue Encampment to get the portal to open?

The cow level is worthless on Nightmare mode. I didn't even finish it because they were dropping crap for items.

Just to summarise and confirm the correct procedure:

You must be on nightmare level or hell level.

Wirts leg and a tp scroll are placed in the cube, and transmuted.

Your character must be standing in the rogue encampment.

It is bloody hard, so as the other suggested, get your character strong before attempting it - Id suggest around level 40 to attempt it on nightmare level, and level 60 at least for hell.

It may be a good idea to have multiple players trying it - even though this boosts up the monster stats, the cow as have a way of surrounding you - and when they keep hitting you can never recover or esacpe easily (except maybe babr leap or sorceress teleport).

A sorceress, necromancer and 1 warior type would make a good combo for attempting the cow level.

It is fun, kind of crazy but youll feel good if you ever complete it - there is some kind of evil cow boss at the end too.

But just to recap - you only get one chance per difficulty level so dont waste it too early - (unless of course you find wirts legs through trading or mule characters).

Thanks all, for the advice.

Have since defeated Diablo and will, as most suggest, wait till I build up character prior to attempting Cow level.
Must admit, am very intrigued

The secret cow level is not such a big deal

Just make sure that you have tons of tp's....
I did it w/ a lvl 28 hammerdin. Not hard at all. sure I had to run and hide and then go back to town, I still did it. took only 3o min.

Have fun killin' the cows.

I just finished cow level with my level 32 necromancer. Used up a lot more manna than I would have liked. Didn't really get much for all the trouble. Only worthwhile item was a mask from a unique set.

When you kill the Cow King, he usually drops a rare or unique, and that in itself makes the trip worth it

As does the hilarious mooing that never stops...
(Moo... Moo... Moomoomoo... MoomoomooMoomoomoomoo.... Moo.... moo... mooMoo... ).

I remember when everyone claimed there was a "cow level" in Diablo 1, but no one had a screenshot, and Blizzard even made one of the cheats in StarCraft "there is no cow level." There used to even be a website dedicated to it ( www.cowlevel.com ), but it's gone now

Anyway, when I first heard that D2 actually *HAD* a cow level, I experienced.... uh.... Happiness! And excitement! yeah...

Well, happy cow-leveling!
Be happy.

I know it's cheating but if you download MacDiablo Trainer from here
http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=8740

you can activate the Cow level and also power up your character to give yourself a fighting chance!

Just to let my fellow Mac Diablo players know, there is a new three piece set in the XP that only drops in the secret cow level. What is it called, why "Cow King's Set" of course. Kind of silly though, considering the item levels and the frequency of drops in the xpansion, the likelihood of many of these sets being completed is probably the same as seeing a ZodZodZod item.
