I don't know why, but they don't talk in the game, speech doesn't seem to work... I have plenty of ram, speech=true in the deusex.ini file, and speech volume is plenty high; I've also installed speech too from the cd, no clue why its not working, any ideas?

Don't worry, man...everyone has had that problem...get the new update at http://www.macgamefiles.com and don't max out the memory just for Deus Ex...leave about 15 megs outside of the application so that quicktime can do its speech uncompression.

Hrm. I dunno. Mine works fine, but then what happens is the speech WILL quit for some reason. Like after playing for 20 min, it speech quits, and I have to restart the game to get it back. Sorta annoying. Anyone know a fix?

DO you have the latest version of quicktime? And boost QTs memory also...

I think he means to allocate more memory to QT player, just like how you 'should' allocate as much memory you have to Deus Ex or upto necessary amount if you have 256 megs or more...never had a problem on my G4...
G4/450, T-bird 1.05GHz, iBook 500, iBook 233...4 different machines, 4 different OSes...(9, 2k, X.1, YDL2.2 respectively) PiA to maintain...

My copy of Deus Ex should be waiting for me when I get home this evening. However, looking at the read me for the update, it recommends leaving DX allocation + 10 meg of RAM free to prevent problems with speech. With DX set to take 155 Meg by default, that 165 Meg of RAM. Am I going to need to upgrade the RAM in my G4 just to run this game? (I currently have 256 MB, so the question is actually rhetorical, but 165 MB to run a game?!?! Are they serious?)

Yes, they are quite serious. It is possible, of course, to use VM when in dire straits, but that slows this game down like nothing else...

Keep in mind that generally, PC versions of the same game typically require more than 3 times the amount of memory that the Mac versions do, but the end user doesn't notice them over there because Windows handles memory for them...so it's not like we're too badly off over here.

Well, now that I've gotten through the training and tested the waters on the first mission, I can say that I haven't seen any speech problems at all. However, this game is a lot more difficult than Q3A or UT. I'm more accustomed to running and fragging than sneaking around. This seems to be a really cool game though. Sheesh! 155 Megs to run a game! (shaking head)

Yeah, this game is the best story/FPS shooter/RPG/whatever the heck you want to call it, that I have ever played. The Gov't should make this a controlled substance. After I got it, my life wasted away as I played Deus Ex and saving the somewhat free world from the bad guys (can't tell you 'cause you'll never know until you play the game...damn story keeps twisting...worse than 'The Game', if you have seen it...)
This game is worth anything...get more memory...get the 1.5 GB of memory if you have a G4...this game upitomizes (sp?) good story telling and gaming.

Not that I like it or anything....

If the problem occurs when you switch maps going from one area to another, then my guess is that the problem stems from a corrupt map file. If this is indeed the problem, then you have two options: try and find whatever map is corrupt by going through the Maps folder manually and looking for the correct name, or just reinstalling DE and hoping that the map in question on the CD isn't corrupt as well. If neither of those work or you can't figure out which map seems to be corrupt, come back here and we'll try to figure it out together.

Blizzard.

P.S You said the problem seems to be a corrupt Saved game? There is an update to DE available that will fix Save and Load games under Mac OS 8.1, if that helps....

Also, Deus Ex is pretty sensitive to errors in the hard drive structure because of its intensive use of data files. I've seen several people clear up errors and crashes in the game by running Norton, Tech Tool, First Aid, etc.

reinstalled DE, but no luck, i just used my last saved game file, and re-did stuff, it sucked, but it was fun nonetheless thanx for the suggestion.

OK, time to get a little more down and dirty...I assume the problem happens as you run from one map into another. The game pauses, the word 'Saving' appears on the screen, followed quickly by the word 'Loading', and then, after a little, the error message pops up. Is that correct? Could you give us the entire message (i.e no stars)? Does it say 'Can't find xxxx.dx' or 'Can't find xxxx.utx/umx/whatever'? Any info provided would be appreciated.

Blizzard.

Hi-

I may not be WetSponge, but I have a similar error...

Here's the text of the error:

Model 02_NYC_Street.Model1259: Serial size mismatch: Got 3515474, Expected 3584271;

I can't get past this! I'm very frustrated...I can't advance past the 'Ton Hotel in NYC....

(BW G3, 256RAM, VM On, 200MB allocated to DE, Mac OS 9.0, Deus Ex updated to 1.01)

Please help! Thanks!

Run a disk repair utility like norton disk doctor, disk first aid, etc. on the hard drive where Deus Ex resides. I've seen the same error on some machines which was eliminated by clearing up a problem or two with the drive structure itself.

Hi there-

Thanks for the response: I already ran Disk First Aid as well as Norton.... no problems! I even installed Deus Ex on another drive, same problem!!

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Yes. Turn on VM, and put it up to like 256 megs. I have 192 megs REAL ram, and I had enough real ram to run the game, but it would 'run out' or something. So, I threw it up to 288 (I think), and now when I play that never happens. I even played for 3 hours straight, and works fine. Still have original non updated version.
