Yeah, probably extensions. Mess around with them some, but make sure that all of the extensions that the ATi card requires to run are in the folder from the get-go. Plus, I'd try reinstalling OpenGL just to make sure that it's not the cause.

Something you might want to look into is the possibility of creating a separate partition and putting a base install of the Mac OS on it to run games as fast, and with as little conflict, as possible. It's a lot of work but I find it worthwhile, as it also gives you a fully functional backup startup disk to operate from in case of emergency. Just a thought, anyways. Good luck.

What is your system configuration? If you have only 64 Meg, that is too little for large modern games like UT unless you turn VM on.

Are you using a CPU upgrade? Apple never sold a G4 PCI (Yikes motherboard) at 450MHz. The Yikes was only released in 350 & 400 configurations.

Download OpenGL 1.1.2
Uninstall/trash All your current Rave /OpenGL/Ati Drivers.
Then reinstall OpenGL 1.1.2, it comes with ATi & Rave QD3D Drivers which WILL need to be installed & active to run game's, even OpenGL games.
Then when you've reinstalled all these drivers make a specfic extensions set with just these drivers + any your system must have/game needs to run such as the CD extension and all open transport extensions (needed for games that can be played over the internet, even if you don't intend to do this), this will lower the amount of Ram yuor oS needs to function + lastly, allocate as much ram as you can to each game by clicking once/highlighting the game app then go File> Get info> Memory and put in as much as you can while leaving an overhead of 15MB Ram minimum (for the graphics API).
You can check how much Ram is avaible on your system by clicking on/going to the finder then Apple Menu> Get Info.
Sorry if all this info is a little to obvious!
P.S OpenGL 1.1.2 does not contain the very latest graphics drivers available but they will work & when you get your games working, you can update your graphics extensions & drivers via the software update control panel to the latest versions.

You do have the AGP G4. I just checked Apple System Profiler on my G4 AGP and it incorrectly shows Slot - A as a PCI slot.

And you are right, 256 MB should handle any game.

I was thinking in terms of an accelerator card driver problem, but since you have AGP after all, that is now ruled out.

I have nothing to add to the others' suggestions. Good luck.

Personally, I had no problems with UT, but had to do a full re-install Q3A...It crashed every time during load the first time I installed it, even with all the updates. One day, I just said what the heck, I'll re-install it and patch it, if it still doesn't work, I'll chew out ID software...and guess what, it worked! After all the trouble I had to go through, I'm a little disappointed with Q3A and think UT is much better...oh well...just my $.02
G4/450, T-bird 1.05GHz, iBook 500, iBook 233...4 different machines, 4 different OSes...(9, 2k, X.1, YDL2.2 respectively) PiA to maintain...
