I once saw Sonic 3 running on a PC, and I was wondering if the same kind of thing would be possible on a Mac. If anyone knows if this is possible or where I could download any, could you please reply.

Sonic 3 is for Sega Genesis (not SNES). Just thought I'd say that.

If you are going for an emulator of the Super Nintendo, go for SNES9X. It seems to be the best for the Mac, and it works well with most ROMs.

That is, if you have legally taken from the cartridge that you own.

And emulation.net is a great place to start your journey into video game history.
