Your PC friend was probably using Bleem, a Windows-only PSX emulator that sacrifices compatibility for improved visuals.
VGS' advantage is that I've never found a game it can't run. The same cannot be said for Bleem, which has a hefty list of games that simply don't run correctly or at all.
Sure, VGS might not have top-notch graphics, but it hardly renders games unplayable... and it is PLAYING the game that you are after, not STARING at the game, right?
