Radeon/500mhz/Radeon.

Playing Oni at resolutions of 1024x768 at either 16 or 32bit color crashes my machine with either:

1) Distorted screen with lines all across screen (but sound/game still sounds like its working in background)

2) Blacked-out screen with sound/game still running in background

This is after about 20 min of playtime and happens consistently across different reboots/extensions.

Software-wise i'm running MacOS 9.1 with very few 3rd party extensions and:

ATI Radeon 3D Accelerator v6.1.8
ATI Driver Update v1.8.2
OpenGL extensions v1.2.1

Everything appears to be in order... is this a clear-cut sign that my Radeon is over-heating?

If so, why do i experience this only in Oni and not other (more intense) 3D games like UT or Q3A?

I assume you've attempted other resolutions?
If your monitor supports it, you could run Oni quite well at 1280x1024/32-bit with that setup.

Also, update your drivers (search www.versiontracker.com ). I didn't check all of 'em, but I did check "ATI Radeon 3D Accelerator," and mine is at version 6.2.0, so I'd assume your others might be outdated as well.

So try other resolutions and driver updates, then report back

Good luck!
Be happy.

That's really strange... checked both the ATi site and VersionTracker and no sign of any updates beyond what drivers/software i have on my machine now. What machine are you running and/or what updates have you installed that you think might have updated your driver to 6.2?

Resolution-wise, the game works just fine at 800x600 (both color depths). Being that i have a 15" LCD with native 1024 resolution that's really what i'd like to be running the game at.

Again, all the other games i've used seem fine. Is Oni more graphically demanding that UT or Q3A? I've noticed i get slowdowns in areas where there is a broad landscape and/or lots of characters attacking at once. Don't get these slowdowns in UT or Q3A.

all those thing happen to me too, but only trying it under os x. Oni works fine at 1024x768 on my cube (450/1gb/rage128/17inch viewsonic). I think that the game is more demanding than other because it was put together in a rush at the last second by bungie. I wish they would have worked out some stuff first (and keep multiplayer). I often think if it took 3 years, they could have done better, not like bungie.

I don't remember installing any drivers with oni.
