How in the heck do you get UT to play on a 2 iMac lan??? I have a Rev. A and my Dad has a new DVSE...connected via ethernet and can play Carmageddon 2 and any other game that uses appletalk, but not UT that uses freaking TCPIP...is there anyway to do it over a direct connection? I have fiddled around with the TCPIP configurations in the control panel to no avail. Please help. Also, Q3A doesn't want to start on my dad's new dvse. It says quake 3 in the upper right after I launch it, but it just stays there. My Rev.A plays the freaking game. HELP...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Um... I think you're overlooking the obvious. I've done stuff this dumb too, dont worry. Heh.
Once you are connected via ethernet, one person goes to "Start Multiplayer", and the other clicks on "LAN games".
Daz it boss.
Hope it works

HRm. Reinstall it. If all your other games work, it doesnt make sense that UT wouldnt.

Yeah, I tried that...but UT only uses TCPIP which is the internet protocol. The other games like myth and such use Appletalk...and/or tcpip. SO, Im not sure how the heck to get it to recognize.

Are you saying you got other IP games to work (like Myth?) If so, then you know it is UT that is not working.
Best bet is to narrow down the possible issues by a process of logical elimination.
1) Make Sure Appletalk works
-set up file sharing on one computer and see if you can connect to it from the other. If this works (as it sounds like it has) you know that you have a working physical connection.
2) Make sure IP works
Get the IP address from one computer. Open Network Browser on the other and connect via the server address option (this forces NB to connect via IP rather than AppleTalk).
3) Start UT on both machines
Set up iMac#1 as the server ("Start multiplayer game) and then look under the LAN games in iMac#2. Wait at least 30 seconds - sometimes it takes a while to register. Also make sure that you have the game configured with the proper # players on the server iMac.
4) If this does not work, swap roles
Host the game on iMac#2 and look for LAN games in iMac#1.
If all of these don't work you should check into what kind of IP address you have listed. If it starts with 169.X.X.X you're getting a dummy address which can (in some cases) cause issues with IP connectivity. Try entering a unique non-public IP into each iMac's TCP/IP control panel such as 10.0.1.1 -> 10.0.1.20. This may give you better chances of getting connected b/c you know what address you're looking for and can connect to the other iMac DIRECTLY rather than just searching for any open LAN games. I have a cable LAN setup in my apt and this is what i had to do before i got a PC and my iMac to "see" each other.
Good luck!

I cant figure out how you guys can possible have problems unless your mac is sick. UT has to be the most networkable game ever! Its so easy! Other games are more complicated to set up for LAN play.

well then ca$h if its so easy, how come you dont give us a little insite on why we cant get it to work. and please dont respond that we are stupid or our macs are sick. i may not be the smartest peanut in the turd, but that can be changed with a little help, and my macs are not sick because ive tried to set UT network right after clean installs on both computers.

Now that i think about it, i had tried to do with 2 Airport-equipped iBooks and had QUITE a bit of trouble getting them to "see" each other. Yet after 20+ minutes of modifying settings eventually it DID work. Again, i would really suggest setting each Mac's IP addresses manually and connecting to the host Mac DIRECTLY, as opposed to searching for LAN games.

Yep, that web page is a good place to learn how to set up TCP/IP for LAN games.
But I don't think you need that Hosts file. It works fine without it.
Just set up the IP's: 192.168.0.x (increment x for each machine)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (for all machines)
I also had some problems when players were tying to join the game I was hosting. They would join then get replaced by a bot.
So I went to the advanced settings and increased the timeout values so they wouldn't get booted. Worked fine after that.

nah, its even easier.
IP: 10.0.0.1 (server)
10.0.0.X (go up one at a time per machine)
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Done. blam. Works.

Thanks...the only thing that really worked time after time was the Network Browser. Just connect to the server (other computer) through NB and start up UT...it worked every time.
