Using RAM Disk to speed loading

Hello,
I was wondering if someone with 1GB+ RAM could test something for me: I would like to speed up the loading of game levels in Q3F [ in particular, although this could help Deus Ex a lot ] by setting up a RAM disk large enough to hold a Q3 Maximum install + Q3F mod, and copying the Q3A folder to it before launching the RAM disk copy of the game. Sure, it will take a while to load the 600+MB into RAM, but then in theory you shouldn't have to wait near as long between levels to get into the game.
Of course, clients will probobly have to wait on the server if it isn't doing the same thing, but does the theory hold true if you are hosting?
Thanks,
z|bandito

Hosting, I would imagine that the speed limit lies not in the speed of the hard drive but in the speed of the network. Remember, the other players are loading the maps off their HDs, not off yours (unless they have to download it, but that's the network speed, not the HD speed) so any changes you make to your end will not be reflected at theirs. Playing, you may notice a difference in the level load time, but as you said, if you have to wait for the other players anyway, what's the point? In theory, it works, but the real world would probably pretty much boink the idea.
P.S If the person in question has a gig of RAM I can't imagine their computer will be all that slow anyways.

I can't imagine anyone would make a 600 meg RAM disk just so they can install Q3A on it for kicks...but i guess its worth asking...

To load that image onto your RAM disk, it would take a while to start up. Also, you need RAM to run Quake III: Arena.
Load the image onto the RAM disk, and double-click it to mount it. There you have it.
Personally, I don't think it's worth it. Give it a try if you must, but the network speed is the bottleneck.
Quake III: Arena doesn't have the most streamlined of downloading sessions, either. I usually get about six kilobytes per second on my T1 downloading maps and mods from servers directly.

OK, so Q3F was a bad example. How about Deus Ex and the loading of savegames?
