What's the deal with 4X4 squeaking by on my Dual 450 Powermac G4? Hell, the graphics aren't even that great... they're not much different than those found in CroMag Rally and that game runs at like 70fps on my machine... what's the deal? just bad code? I'm not really looking for a technical response... just ranting cause I'm pissed off my shiny new G4 can't run the only new racing sim well... anyone else feel the same way?

Blame it on apple. Open GL stinks. If you had a glide card and ran it in Glide mode it'd run pretty nice....

I'm running 4x4 Evolution on a G4/400 with a Radeon and it runs great. I run at 800 x 600 with graphics detail on high and mipmapping off. If you're seeing stuttering during play, remove folder tabs before launching the game. Also, something must be wrong with your setup because the graphics are phenomenal and a lot different from those found in Cro-Mag Rally. Each vehicle in 4x4 Evo is modelled using about 10,000 polys while Cro-Mag doesn't come close to that (and doesn't need to for a kart racer).

There's a reason developers are phasing out Glide support and focusing on OpenGL.

Btw, my thoughts mimick Trevor's... I have no problem running the game on my G4/450 or my Pismo.

The demo ran so badly on my G4 I threw it away and decided not to buy the game, even though I was looking forward to it.

Yes, Cash. Glide is being phased out; OpenGL is THE cross-platform replacement. I'd rather Apple worked more on OpenGL than for programmers to touch Glide....

Plus, it doesn't work well with the ATI cards in every Apple machine, hmmmm?

Sorry, Wolf...I haven't seen a problem with the game either......

Ruddiger:

I'd seriously recommend trying the demo again. Did you remove your folder tabs before launching the demo? You can also just command-tab back to the finder and dismiss the dialog before command-tabbing back to the game to eliminate the stuttering. Then set the graphics settings on the lowest possible and you should see very good framerates. Increase graphics settings until you like what you see and you can live with the framerates.

No, I didn't know anything about folder tabs, I have 7 on at all times. Why should that matter? It just really got to me, it runs great on my friends PC, and I wanted to play against him, but it ran like crap. I'll redownload the demo and post again.

What happens is that when you have folder tabs and you start a game that changes your resolution to a smaller size than what you run your usual applications at (like 4x4 Evo does), a window pops up telling you that it couldn't keep your tabs because there wasn't enough space on the screen after the resolution change. The system doesn't like having this 2D context behind the 3D context, and thus it significant slows down 4x4 Evo and causes stuttering unless you:

a) Remove the tabs before you start up 4x4 Evo, or
b) Command-Tab back to the finder after the 3D portion of the game is displaying and dismiss the dialog regarding the folder tabs.

Okay, well, this time it crashed my machine on the lowest settings.

But, I'm only running it with 64MB of RAm this time, my 128 chip died, so I guess I'll try it again when that comes.

I really hope it works.

Runs fast and perfect under Glide. Thought I'd add that. I'm glad the 'superior' API is slower and more buggy.
