I found a way to play Diablo II 1.08 at 800x600.

Things you'll need.

Download the .mpq patch available at this page... http://www.lurkerlounge.com/stsi/stsi0129.shtml
Here's the direct link to the file. http://www.lurkerlounge.com/x/800patch_d2.mpq

Open up your Diablo II Files folder and find the Diablo II Patch file.
Rename it something else like Diablo II Patchold
Next, rename your 800patch_d2.mpq file to Diablo II Patch and place it in your Diablo II File folder

Next, you'll need ResEdit.
Backup your Diablo II Preferences file and open it up in ResEdit.
Double click on HKEY.
Create a new resource and give it this value:
0000000400000001

Get Info on the new resource (should default to resource ID 128)
and paste

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\Diablo II\Resolution

into the Name: box.

Save your preferences and quit Resedit.

Now when you play Diablo II you'll play at 800x600.

Setting
0000000400000001
to
0000000400000000
should make the game run at 640x480

It looks tight!
