Both. I like all of em. You can get FF8 for cheap now. Get that, then wait for FF9 to drop and price and snag that

i wouls go with 8. I just picked it up for ~$20. FF9 is too rich for my blood right now, and i wasnt too impressed with the comercials, etc. is it just me, or did the heros get a heck of alot younger? i dont know but i am tired of this pokemon anime kiddy influence on heros in games. some is good, but alot is bad. FF7 is the reason i purchased a psx, and to this day, i am not dissapointed. I have heard 8 is a good game, so i am going to give it a shot. I am just waiting for the next game to dictate my next console purchase. until then, psx is good enough for me.

There's someone in my head but its not me...

FF8 is worst of the PSX Final Fantasies.

FF9 is a whole lot better -- if money isn't an issue, get it!
Be happy.

If you can afford both, get both. They're both great games. Otherwise, get 9. In my opinion, it's the second best game in the series (4 was the best in the series). At the very least, they brought back the black mages with no faces and glowing eyes (which haven't been seen since Final Fantasy 5).

You may not be aware of this, but you can also get Final Fantasy 5 and 6 for PlayStation as part of Final Fantasy Anthology. While I'm not a big fan of FF5, FF6 is my third favorite game in the series.

I've played FF7, FF8, and FF9. Each really has its forte. FF7 had a great intriguing story. FF8 had fancy graphics and a good love story. FF9 brings the fancy graphics of FF8, ups it up, and goes back to its FF roots.

Play FF8 first, then get FF9 when you're done. Either way, both games are great.

I've decided to change my answer (slightly). If you're short on money, wait until the spring; Square will be releasing Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger together. As I've mentioned before, Final Fantasy IV is the best game ever; Chrono Trigger is also an incredible game.

If money is not an issue, get every Final Fantasy game for PlayStation you don't have (Final Fantasy Anthology, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy IV/Chrono Trigger). They're all incredible games.

From best to worst, here's how I rank the Final Fantasy series:

4,9,6,7,8,5,1

(Like most people outside of Japan, I've never played Final Fantasy II or III.)
