So, I'm stuck at home and VERY bored for Christmas Break. I'm thinking of getting Simcity3K to allievate some boredom. I can get it for $20. Anybody think that's a good buy? If not, what should I get for an iBook? I already have SC/BW but I don't know much about other games outside of the FPS genre. Myth? C&C? other sims? etc.

I'm so bored.

How much RAM do you have? SC3K says it'll run with 64MB. Bullsh!t. 128 is the real minimum. But, if you can run it well enough, it'll definetely alieviate your boredom

Some other stuff you could try would be The Sims (faster than SC3K in almost all situations), Diablo II, Alpha Centauri (great game, not intense), and Master of Orion 2 (very easy to play with a trackpad).

Happy unboredom!

Which iBook do you have? You really need 192 MB of RAM to play SC3K at all decently, and even then, it runs rather slowly and the response time is pretty bad (even on a DP G4/500 with 1 GB of RAM; it's the app, not the system).

If you can find a copy, get SimCity 2000 instead. It's better. It's got a Macintosh interface.
Is this a good place for an argument?

Wow, it needs that much RAM? WTF, that sucks. I only have 92 megs in my iBook (the first rendition blueberry). Sucky.

I already have MOO2. About the Sims, to me it seems like it is a really good game for like the first 2 weeks and then it is boring and sucks. Of course, I have never played the game, but I've watched others play it. Does The Sims really have a long lived entertainment value? About Alpha Centuari, is it at all like Civ 2? I thought that game sucked. . . Maybe I will get SC2K.

Where'd ya hear Alpha Centauri sucked? A wrestling fan or something? Not that I have a bias towards wrestling fans... <looks around, starts whistling>

Yes, it is somewhat similar to Civ 2. It's really a good game.

And I seem to be the only Mac gamer on the planet that likes SC3K, even on my psuedo-pathetic iMac 350

Master of Orion II is an awesome game! I don't play it much because I'm too damn busy, but I love it every time I get back into it.

Yeah, MOO2 is good. I think I like the original MOO better though because you can build more ships! I don't like how you can max out your command points so quickly in MOO2. You heard much about MOO3? Is it coming out for the Mac? I would imagine so since both of it's predecessors did.

Cool. Just read the FAQ -- they say they'd love to do a Mac version, like with the others!

But, seems like we're about a year and a half from release time

If you can find it, the game that I most recommend buying would be the original Command & Conquer.
It is the best strategy game out there, and will provide hours of entertainment.
Don't get any of the Heroes of Might and Magic games. No real strategy, and they get old in an hour.

I second that (mostly)... although Total Annihilation is better...

Sim City 3k is nice because it uses quicktime. It would be even nicer
if you could download an update with atmosphere and more disasters that ran on OS X. it works just excellent with that interface.
I usually drag all my Sim City 2k games to Sim City 3k icon so i can continue my game.
As far as games go we need a broader number of genre's. it's
become to boring with strategic, first person shooters, and sims.
And even the games that make it from consoles are not nearly as good as the original versions. If developer's really want to make a dent in the PC market they have to have to have bigger companies behind them. Aspyr is a nice one with variety, but the more games
that we have with quality and story the more audience we are going to reach.

I've been playing SC3k on my blueberry iBook with 128mb of RAM and have found it to run fast enough until a very large tile city gets up over half a million in population. I was able to make it run faster, however, by increasing the memory allocations in the info box. I set the minimum memory to 48000 and the preferred memory to 88000. Now its speedy enough for my taste. Saving the game regularly also seems to help keep the pace moving.

$20 seems a bargain to me. I've gotten countless hours of procrastination out of it!

Where'd you find it for $20? I was looking all over the place for SC3K, but I couldn't find it anywhere. I just assumed it was discontinued.

And while we're on this topic. Does anyone know where to get a copy of Starship Titanic? I know it wasn't really a great game, but I'm a fan of Douglas Adams. The last time I looked (in November) there was a hybrid CD out there, but no one was selling it.

I saw SC3k at Software Etc. for $20. I don't know if they have that chain out in Florida (I was in Alaska). You might want to try Egghead or Babbages or something like that or an online vendor. I might end up buying it if I find it for cheap again.

No clue about the Starship Titanic game. . .

This is a bit off topic, but does anyone know if its possible to play SC3k without the CD? I have a Powerbook and want to play on the road, but having the CD in constantly will hurt battery life.

Nope, but it is a very small file (well under 10 megs, and I think it's less than 5). Theoretically, I could email it to you. You might be able to buy it somewhere. . .check ebay maybe.

Try www.themacsmith.com! They have great prices for Macintosh Software. I purchased Star Wars Pod Racer for $18.99 from them, while the rest of the stores had it at the original price of 29.99 - 39.99. Even if others have it at the same price I would first purchase from a Mac Only Reseller than a Multi Platform Reseller because I want to know that the purchases are being counted towards the Mac!
