I'm a newbie to Unreal, so please forgive my ignorance. My friend and I both have UT and DSL connections. We want to play each other over the net. I have tried starting a multiplayer game, but my friend can't seem to locate it in the list of servers. I have gone over the settings a million times and am pretty sure that I have everything set. Do I need to go to a dedicated server and play him there? How does this work? Any explanation would be great...Thanks in advance.

You have DSL, but do you have a static or dynamic IP address? Are you using a firewall?

In order to host an internet game, you have to know your ip address (either static, or the current session's dynamic address). Only then can other gamers locate you. Also, if you have a firewall of any kind, you have to open TCP port 7777 to the machine serving UT.

Once you know your IP address, other gamers can go Multiplayer > Open Location and put in your ip address. Your server has to already be running before this is done.

Good luck. The alternative is to find a server on the internet and both connect to it.

Sweet! Thanks for the tip. I have a dynamic IP, but I am using a router which keeps it static. I didn't have the 7777 port open on it though, which was probably the problem. I appreciate your help!

You said that your router keeps your IP address static. This isn't so. It keeps a static internal IP address. Your friend will still have to connect to whatever external dynamic IP you generate that session. Check your router setup to get this number. Also remember to keep open port 7777.

Quick thought here, isnt it just faster to log onto Game Ranger and then set a password for people to join so that only your buddy can play?

That Game Ranger looks sweet. Unfortunately my friend is still living in the dark ages and has yet to see the light to buy a mac. After constantly 'WOW'ing him with the quality that gets produced from my mac, he is teetering on the edge of buying one...that is a entirely different topic however. Is there another service similar to Game Ranger that supports both Mac and that other OS...what was that called again?

You only need to open port 7777 if you have a router or a firewall. If you are just going straight through a DSL/Cable modem, there is nothing to do. You should be able to connect.

edhawke,
I connect ok to play UT, but if I want to host a game I only show up if I connect on my dial-up 56k. If I start a multiplayer game my computer doesn't show up on DSL or wireless.
