so, I went down to fry's electronics in Palo Alto today and paid $60 for a copy of Warcraft III. I take the game home, open it up, put in the CD and install.
Up comes the window asking for my CD-key, and I look for it on the CD case. I looked on the front and the back, but there is no CD key. There isn't one on the CD, nor on the manual, build-chart, nor advertisement booklet that were also in the box.
So, I take the game back to Fry's and ask to exchange it. After referring me to multiple customer service people, they would not let me exchange the game. They say that it isn't defective, and they won't take it back or let me get a new one. They say it is my responsibility to call blizzard and deal with the issue through them.
Well, blizzard is closed on sundays. On their web site, it seems that the only way to get a CD key if one is missing is mail the game and receipt it to their company and wait for them to send you a new copy.
This is such a crock. All I want to do is play this game that I legitimately paid for, and it seems that I will have to wait over a week for the US mail to work its magic.
anyone know of a way to play the single-player without a key?

I do not agree with pirating games, but if you legitamately bought the game and are desperate to play it, you can get a CD key generator off the internet. This will give you a CD key (which probably belongs to somebody else). However, as long as you don't play BNet, and as long as you reinstall when you get your key from blizzard, I wouldn't hold it against you to try this.
I bought my copy the day it came out. I'm enjoying it so far, but it runs like a P.O.S on my iBook 500.

Warcraft III is crock of sh*t just because you can't find a serial number? Oh please
You happened to have a lemon copy somehow so don't blame all of this to WC3. Call or E-Mail Blizzard to see what is up first.

There is a whole FAQ section in the book that tells you what to do if you don't have a Key on the case... they say if it's within 30 days, they will send you a new one, and if it is after that amount, they will send you one for $10

That happened to me when I bought Marathon Infinity. They gave me a bunk serial, so I called htem up, they sent me a good serial with a Bungie coupon (20% off any bungie product that has no expiration date) so I'm going to use it on Halo. I hope they accept a coupon 7 years old. woo woo.

Well, I tried calling Blizzard's customer service and technical service department, but all I would ever get during office hours was a busy signal. Makes you wonder about Warcraft III, but I'll give them some leeway since its new and they probably have never tried a software release of the magnitude before.
I sent an email to their tech support, and got an automated response. However, that email refered me to their web site where I eventually found a page describing what to do if there is no CD-key.
Basically I had to send them my sales receipt and the CD case back to them, and they will send me a key back.
When I receive the key, I'll post the amount of time it rook them to respond.

IMO, a product that is unusable due to missing items is pretty damn close to being defective. I never ran into anything like this before, do most stores have the same policy?
