I enjoyed baldurs gate more. Its a really in depth rpg. I hear thought that baldurs gate II is fantastic on pc and I cant wait for it to arrive on mac.
Diablo II is a good game. Its more of an action game than BG - make no mistake there. It does, however, have a wonderful multiplayer element. Its very much a hack and slash game but it really is cool when you get together with a group of people ove rbnet and tgake out demons - etc. And that expansion pack that is forthcoming is likely to be great.
If you only want to buy one consider this - do I want a great single player rpg or a great multiplayer hack & slash/rpg hybrid? Because that is the diff.
Also consider this, BG2 is on its way, likely to be availble within soon, and so is Neverwinter nights, although it is further away, it is meant to be awesome - multiplayer rpg at its best.
Also, a comment on BG multiplay - its unstable at the best of times. The single player game more than makes up for it though.
If you havent considered it, fallout 2 is another excellent rpg.

As far as carrying over a character from BG to BGII, you can do it on the PC version, so I *assume* you will be able to do it, on the mac version. The only hitch is that BG was done by GraphSim and BGII is being done by MacPlay. Since two different companies are doing them, let's hope they don't change anything drastically.
As far as OS X goes, don't expect anything for BG. GraphSim moves at a snails pace (like the multiplayer patch "coming soon"). Plus, financially, the games too old for them to do a port. But I suppose it could run in classic. The nice thing is that it doesn't require advanced graphics card support, which I've heard the early OS X will have troubles with.

Expect most of MacPlay's upcoming games to be carbonized for use on Mac OS X. Mumbo Jumbo, the company which is porting all of MacPlay's titles (not to mention developing Myth III: The Wolf Age), is packed with some experienced programmers that are likely just as excited to play these games on OS X as you are.
So, while some of their titles might not ship carbonized (considering that most game developers have been waiting for the final release of Mac OS X to get their work started), they'll likely be carbonized as an update.

Baldur's gate is a much, much better game in my opinion. I wasn't crazy about Diablo II, but some of my friends think it is the best. Try 'em before you buy 'em....

BALDUR'S GATE ROCKS.
Diablo II is good...but not as good as BG IMO.

I like Diablo II better, I would get that. Then after you have played to death, you will, go outside again and then buy BG 2 which will probably be hitting the shelves by then.

BG is better than DII, i've owned both but found BG to be much more fun, and much more challenging. DII as the level progress have more and more of the same thoughless monsters, that is: it is really boring and not challenging, i'd say anoying.
BG: enemies take some thought and strategy on how to defeat: what spells should you memorize, who is at the front of the party, who should be in the party, should i trade this player character for that one, should i go on this mission or not, should i rob this poor helpless peasant or not, etc etc ad infinitum.
no contest. i can see why people like DII more, i'm just not one of them.

Diablo 2 is basically this: Find patch with lots of monsters in it. Put cursor over monster, hold. When monster is dead, move to different spot. That is basically all you do...it sucks. I guess I will have to buy BG if i wanted a good RPG...or maybe I could just go with Avernum 2
Get BG, Diablo 2 is a waste.
