I had dial-up, then wireless, now dsl. On Thursday I'm having cable installed. Will this be my answer to better performance for on-line gaming? Dial-up was 56k, running along at 42. Wireless was 256, running at 200-500 depending on the time of day, but the upload was slow-as low as 10-12. DSL is supposed to be 384, but usually runs at 175-320 max and only seems marginally better than the dial-up other than being more consistent and better in high ping games. My cable is supposed to be 512 down and 256 up. Shouldn't this be the trick? Everything but the dial-up runs into my ethernet connector from a converter or external modem.

You better hope it is! Geese! I used 64 ISDN at home, could goto 128 if I needed but never had. D2, SC, etc... But I don't do Q3 or a lot of online gaming all together and now at school, connection speed is about the last thing I need to speed up my online gaming

Even though Cable connections can sometimes give you faster downloads and upload ratios, they're not steady. DSL is the way to go. It doesn't really on your neighborhood's usage of teh service.

At some point it isn't the bandwidth, but the network latency that matters most.

I'm just hoping I'm not wasting another $100-150 for marginally good
performance. My computer work area is now surrounded by unused ethernet cables, psci cables, modems, etc. Lake Havasu is a remote desert area.

I have both cable and ADSL and can tell you unequivocally that cable is better.

I keep the ADSL only because it's static, and I can't get static cable.

I have yet to experience anything remotely resembling the upstream and downstream speeds I am suppose to get with ADSL. Those ratings are from you to the CO, nothing more.

I really like my @home cable. I had ADSL and loved it, but moved two miles down the road and about 100 feet out of the city limit line, where they stopped the dsl connections. I got 1.5mb/sec on dsl, and was really dissappointed not to get it back. So I called @home to get cable, now I get 2.1 to 2.6 mb/sec and can say I like it even better, and my online games even play better to me. And best of all, I live in a neiborhood with middle/upper class elderly people whom I believe not to use cable internet much(it they do, I'm sure there not pushing the bandwidth much). So I get some killer speeds.
