I recently picked up Quake 3 (finally) and am wondering where I can find the famous 1.17 update (presently at 1.11). I have looked everywhere. Does anyone know the where I can find it?
Thanks!

Here is the latest update to Quake 3:
http://homepage.mac.com/WebObjects/F...US&lang=en

It's at Graeme Devine's iTools homepage. You must first update with 1.27g, this update adds the necessary pak files to your quake folder. Then download this update from Graeme's iTools page, when unstuffed it simply says "g3". Replace the 1.27 quake launcher with the "g3" launcher and you are set to frag.

1.27 is way slower than 1.17, since 1.27 is full of debugging code (it's a beta). This g3 version seems to be about as fast or faster than 1.17, and it has a few new features, too. (when you frag someone, a number rises from their body indicating your rank in the deathmatch).
Actually I think none of these upgrades except 1.17 are really worth anything, but to play online you must be updated to 1.27 for many servers. It seems that 1.27 introduced some audio bugs and they've never been resolved.

What I'm dyin' to get my hands on is the Altivec optimized version of Quake 3 that Devine's been working on for months. If it's half as good as he says, then my Powermac G4 is going to be stomping Pentium IIIs for breakfast! I'll still suck at Quake, but at least my Mac will run it fast!!!!

I checked out the 1.17 update and noticed that it was designated to remedy on-line issues. I did download the update but have not installed it for the reason that, if I do not play on-line (as I too am still a novice having only ever played Quake I), do I really need to bother? You do mention that it does speed things up, so perhaps for this reason it is worth it (I am quite happy with how it is playing presently on my pismo with 128 mgs of ram). Lastly, is it possible to skip the 1.17 and simply do the 1.27g and 1.27h? And, again, should I even bother?

Thanks again!
