I just got the Radeon for my B&W G3, and wanted to give my dada the older ATI 128 card for his 8500.

It installs fines, drives the monitor fine, but the ATI software (v1.1.1) says it can't find any ATI hardware, and games don't find any hardware acceleration either.

I'm pretty sure the original B&W 128 card was designed for Apple. Can it be used in other PCI based machines? Any ideas on why the ATI software doesn't recognize it?

What system software version is the 8500 running?
It should work... try a different PCI slot... did the 8500 have different speed PCI slots? I know it had three slots, but not details...

i remember something about the original ATI 128 card being a 66mhz PCI card... the 8500 probably only has 33mhz slots, this may be the reason...

anyone know for sure?

It's running OS 9.1.

There are 3 PCI slots. According to some old Apple docs, it's a 33Mhz bus.

pci speed shouldn't matter.
many people upgrade the 66 MHz slot in their blue g3s and decide to stick the stock card in a 33 slot and add a second monitor.
-sorry i can't be of more help, best of luck

It should work fine in the Platinum G3.
When installing the software you need to do a custom install to get around the ATI Hardware check. Then select the card that most resembles your card OEM ATI 128 card, which I believe is the ATI 128 Orion.
