Does anyone know if the computer has anything to do with high pings. If I buy a pc for gaming will I see lower pings and improved on-line gaming performance? I'm on an Imac dvse OS9.04 and have literally spent hundreds trying to find a type of connection that will give me lower pings for playing Unreal Tournament and hopefully Red Faction. I have had wireless 256k, dial-up 56k, DSL 384k, and now cable 512/256k which I've tested on DSL Reports at 480 down and 660 up. It is a rare ocuurence that I can find a server that I am less than 120 ping. DSL has provided the most consistent because I find when I enter a game that shows even a 300 ping I can manage to get a 200 or so ping, but that isn't adequate when I am competing against 60-80 pings. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

buying a pc shouldn't give you a better ping... you sure your game isn't moving incredibly slow because the video card in your iMac is junk?

Ben,
I honestly don't know if the card is junk. It's a newer Imac 500mhz.
Will a different card lower my ping? At this point I'll even spend $1,000 on a pc if it makes gaming more fun.
Thanks,
Doc

I don't think your ping will be adversely affected by using a Mac. Your bandwidth might be more efficiently used by a PC, and you will likely see smoother graphics, but I don't think the Mac allows you to play competitively online. I have a Mac for work and a PC for play; my PC, which I built for $700 about a year ago (1.4-gigahertz Athlon with a GeForce3, currently) gets 300 frames per second at 1024 by 768 and full detail. You should either have a console or a PC for games and a Mac for work.

The main advantage of having a PC is smoother graphics. Your ping might drop a few milliseconds, but that's an issue with Internet lag.

It's not your line's fault that you ping 200 milliseconds to a game. What do you ping to your DSL gateway? 120 ping is usually a result of playing on a server a distance away. You should ping about 50-60 on a DSL line like that.

Thanks for replying seanyepez!
I'm sorry, but I don't know what you mean by 'ping to my DSL gateway'
Shouldn't the cable work the best because of the speed i.e. 512.So far the cable and the DSL work about the same. I would estimate the closest server is 200 miles away.
What brand of pc should I buy?
Which graphics card?
Is Dell or Gateway ok?
Thanks again.

Unreal Tournament is for Australian panzies.

Try Quake III deathmatch, and you have yourself a real game.

You can't compete with someone who spends four to six hours a day playing first-person shooters.

LOL

But any game can ge defined as *click*click*
It's the only input you use in any game!

Only quake would be *click*click* DIE *click*click* DIE *click*click* DIE

No?

Llamas are stinky. I've actually been to Peru and been overcome with their foul stench.
