i finished the game (polaris) with a striker. after the last mission (before the game ended) i could have purchased a scrab, but it would have been nice to play with a bigger ship and just to blow stuff up.

something along the lines of show me the money would be great =)

There is one system, I think it's Fomalhaut, where you can make lots of money on buying opals at Low on one planet and selling them at High on the other. You get lots of cash from that.
The low-end Mac Pro is the most overpriced Mac since the IIvx

It's the Gehjon system. Buy on Thror. Sell on Thraine.

Sol->Nesre Prime>Arcturus->Gehjon.

If you get Leviathans, I'd highly recommend waiting until you get at least 4 million before you hire. Initial hiring cost is 1.2 million. Then it's 120000 a day. Plus you need a lot of cash to load up on opals (enough to buy 4000+ tons) and have enough money to make one day payment on the Leviathan as you switch planets. I lost about 7 million in botched Leviathan hirings. But after you get your Leviathans hired you'll make money very very fast. Of course, to get a Leviathan you have to be a Sigma Shipping employee first.

Fomalhaut is, however, where you can make lots of money by mining and then selling opals. The planet only buys for Low, but when all ya gotta do to load up is shoot rocks, you're in great shape. Haven't tried doing that with escorts yet, tho.
