Since you play Q3 on your Titanium Powerbook, I'd got something to ask of you: You often complain about Q3 being choppy because of the display on the powerbook- Have you tried using /r_swapinterval 1 with sync every frame? If you haven't, try it and tell me if it's much smoother.
