Well, well, well. I have the original Quake 3 Arena CD. I installed it, and then made a copy of the full install for my OS X Applications folder. I updated to version 1.3, and then tried to update to the new beta 5 that was released yesterday on macgamefiles.com. Buuuut, it asks for a retail installation when i try to start it up. I try to select something in the folder that was installed, but it doesn't let me. I try to select something possibly on the CD, and still nothing. Sooooo, my question is, how do i get this to work?!

I came on the board to post the same thing! I have the same problem. Installed Quake3 from the box onto my new iMac. Upated to ver 1.3 and then downloaded 1.31b5 but have no clue what to do with the files or where to put them. It asks me some stupid retail installation question. Is 1.3 supposed to be for X? It need 9 to launch. Im confused. I thought there was already a X and optimized for G4 version of Arena out. Someone please help us

When it asks for the retail installation directory, goto the folder where you put the install files from CD. I believe it's just looking for your baseq3 folder. So for example, if your baseq3 folder is located in a folder called Quake3, then point to the Quake3 directory wherever it is on your hard drive. Don't point it directly at the baseq3, it won't work. Go one level up. HTH.

Did you upgrade : 1.30 -> 1.3b4 -> 1.3b5, without skipping the b4 ?
If not ,try it.

hey
well your in luck, my friend helped me with the same issue last night.
I will try to make it easy.
1.send all quake files to the trash, empty it too
2.after you unstuff the patch for OSX put the folder on the desktop ( for easy access, you can move it later ) so then you will have a quake3 folder on the desktop
3.then from the CD go to the quake folder and then the baseq3 folder and copy the pako.pk3 to the baseq3 folder in the desktop quake folder, it is a large one around 450 MB, don't bother with the quake installer
4. if you are using team arena do the same thing as mentioned above but with the mission folder
5. Now you have all the nessesary files for quake3 so you can take out your CD now. IF IT DOES NOT WORK then you have a file on your computer that is supposed to update itself when you update the files ( if that makes sense ) and it has not, so go to sherlock and search for quake files, if there is one that is com.idsoftware.plist ( something like that ) in your preferances, I think - doesn't matter ERASE IT then try again - restart if it doesn't work - then it will.
this is all from memory so good luck

Hey there..
I tried doing what you suggested and while it looks like it's working, the screen just hangs while going white (I do see the Quake splash screen before it goes white)...
Any thoughts?? This happened on two machines.. An iMac 500 DVSE and a B&W G3 400... Do I need to reinstall OpenGL or anything like that???
Thanks!

Yeah, i tried what you said, and while it does start to start up, and says Quake 3 in the app headline in the menu bar, it unexpectedly quits everytime. Let me remind, i install Quake 3 Arena from the CD which is 1.0 I hear that you need to upgrade to 1.3 and then to 1.3b5. That's what i've tried, and it still doesn't work. Also, should i be installing some things from OS 9 and some from OS X, or should everything be from one OS? Why can't this be as easy as UT is to update?

The Same thing happened to me a long time ago. I couldn't select the retail install with one of the updates to Q3. But I just reinstalled the game and then used the updater to select the Q3 folder and it worked. And the mac is easier to fix with games or anything, unlike said earlier

1-Download the Quake3 v1.30 and the v1.31 updates from MacGamefiles.com (you need both).
2-Move v1.30 to the Applications folder on your OSX hard drive - or wherever you want the game to be installed (ie Applications/Games).
3-Expand v1.30 1st - this will create all necessary folders for Quake3 in Applications.
4-Expand v1.31 on the desktop and copy the files from the new sub folders on your desktop to the sub folders in your pplications/Quake3 folder (they will have the same names).
5-Finally, copy the very large (450megs or so) pak file from the baseq3 folder on your Quake3 CD to the baseq3 folder in Applications. I forget the name of this pak file offhand - it may be pk3.pak or similar. But it's gigantic compared to the others on your Q3 CD so you can't miss it. The game will not operate without this pak file.
That's it. You should see two separate Q3 applications. One is OS9 and the other OSX. You'll know if you click the wrong one because it will try to start classic.
Almost forgot, make sure you have your CD jewel case handy the 1st time you start Quake3. It will ask for the serial number on the back cover. regards......joe

i dont understand **** about all your troubles... its so f****** simple , the best way is to make a "Quake 3" folder in applications, then make an "baseq3" folder in that folder... then drag all the "pak" files to your baseq3 folder from your disc.. its all you need.. then take the b5 Q3 patch(you dont need all the others) and unstuff it to the "Quake 3" folder.. it ALWAYS works for me like this
