I've just installed my new UT, and am itching to get started... I load up the app, and try to start a game - boink! No maps files are found - even though the program's freshly installed!

Any ideas?

That's pretty weird. I'd recommend downloading the 425 update ASAP, and then download and install the 425a update over that which was just released today. Hopefully that should clear up whatever is causing the problem.

Well, I've had a fiddle and what I've come up with is this:

I deleted it, reinstalled and then updated to 425. All was fine, although a few games later I lost all sound - but I prefer to play it in the quiet anyway.

Occasionally I still see maps disapearing from the game selection screen... their names are still there, but no 'preview' picture, and unable to start a game with them.

I had a quick check of the options, and noticed that the Video (where it says RAVE) was a garbled line.

So.... I chucked the prefs file away, and bingo! My maps came back - although still no sound.

So continous corruption of the prefs file is occuring, even over fresh installs. How very strange.

Cheers

Sounds to me as though you're getting directory corruption. Have you installed the 425a update from yesterday yet?
Is this a good place for an argument?

"directory corruption" ....

Try running Disk First Aid on your volumes. The problem need not be in UT, the actual disk directory could be damaged.

I've heard of people's sound preferences going bunk too, so delete that... its in the pref folder..

Luckily I've had like 0 probs with frankenimac thus far. Good luck!

Folks,

Thanks for all your help. After trashing the prefs file(s) I ran TechTool Pro round my disk. I haven't had any lost map files since.

The sound does still come and go with the weather, but I can put up with that.

Cheers.
