I know the obvious answer here is "duh, of course you do!", but I have a thought here. I know that Classic is needed for the initial install of DII, and the expansion set, but I want to nuke the OS 9 stuff for good.
My thought is this: if I have installed it normally with the expansion set and the OS X patch, can I just copy that final folder to disk and just use that in the future? I mean, when all the installations are done, there's only one Diablo II folder, so can't I bypass an installation in Classic by just placing that folder back in my applications folder (i.e., if I reformat my HD or whatever, can't I just place the DII folder into the Applications folder)?
Any insight here would be appreciated...

IT SHOULD work, but that would suck a lot if it didn't. how much HD do you have? I ask because with D2 carbon I too am done with OS 9 forever. But then i realized how much HD does classic take? High end guess is 1.5 gigs (I really don't think tis' that much). I have 120 total, so I figure what's 1.5 when I still have over 40 free. Basically unless you really need the HD space there is not a whole lot of reason to kill off 9 completely.

The short shall inherit the earth. Just you wait. You won't see us coming. We'll pop out from under tables, beds, and closets in hordes. So you're tall, huh? You won't be so tall when I chew off your ankles. Mofo

On the new iMac, HD space is not an issue. But, on my iBook, I've only got 10GB with only about 3.5 still left. I can't put a whole lot else on it without fear of running out...

Yes, it works. I know for a fact because I did it I copied the Diablo II folder over to my iBook, and it doesn't even have OS 9 on it.

Removing Classic/9 isn't just about Hard Drive space, there's something very fulfilling about it on a psychological level.
I actually bought Diablo II *after* already having deleted classic... ended up having to mount my hard drive on my roomates' laptop, run the installer there and do a net-install.
Worked like a charm! Gotta love Apple...

You also need Classic to play the game. I know there's a Carbon path available, but in order to play without having to use a Dual 1 GHz machine, Classic runs it normally.

?? Are you saying that the games runs too slowly for you? Runs just fine on my 333MHz G3 with 320 megs of RAM. If you are having troubles try Software mode for your video, DII has lots of problems with hardware acceleration, especially with nVidia cards. Not to mention that a lot of people who have DII: LoD downloaded the DII patch, not the DII: LoD patch (they are different), which would boot, but caused major bug issues.
