I got my iMac back from the shop and Podracer is pausing at random times during the race. I boot up in 8.6 and the problem is not there. However, they replaced the logic board and before they did that I had the same settings on my hard drive for this game as I do now. Is there anything I can tweak either in the game or in Mac OS 9.0 that would help? Processor cycling is off.

Try a minimal extension set, increase the preferred memory allocation on the Racer app and set virtual memory to 1 MB above physical.

Also, make sure the Energy Saver control panel is enabled. Even if you turn off processor cycling, if the Energy Saver CP is not loaded, processor cycling comes back on by default.

I have a different problem with pod racer. The ATI extensions included with Multi Media update 1.0 make the game un-playable. It's just a bunch of garbled lines and stuff. But when I go back to old ATI Drivers (located on the iMac install CD) it's fine again.

I have a pod racer problem!
I cant get it to recognice my USB gamepad (Ariston Hermes). The gamepad works fine with e.g. virtual gameboy and sixtyforce. I have tried to find information and/or updates, drivers on the internet but failed. Cant understand why no one else have been exploring similar problems? Further, where has the Ariston company gone? Their homepage is closed and all information on their products on the net is more than one year old!
(excuse my English! I'm a Swede!)

I think it only supports joysticks, and not gamepads, 'cause my Gravis gamepad doesn't work either.

What about a Thrustmaster Afterburner joystick? I can't seem to get it to work either. When race starts, it'll just go round in circles. (mouse has been disabled). Also can't get it to change settings in joystick setting page. Was hoping to use this joystick with just a few of its functions for this game before we (I mean my kids) get a flight sim (korea F18?) I've already down loaded 1.7.5 draw sprockets into my extension file. Also tried with joystick plugged into keyboard and then in other usb in back of the machine. Gettin frazzled?#$@#@#$

Thanks

Friends with frustration,
I have solved the problem!
The pod racer program seems badly coded for the controler interface. However, the keyboard works fine for control input. Therefore, download the shareware USBoverload (http://www.usboverload.com) install it and throw your old stick/pad drivers! With the USBoverload you can configure all kind of input devices and it works fine (you configure the stick/pad buttons with the games default keyboard commands). Now I am able to control my podracer with my Ariston gamepad and I think anyone will be able to do the same with their sticks/pads!

A guy at work helped out a bit. He found two source;one said to turn off the Appleguide extension and another said to make sure that the Thrustmaster is turned on along with the Game sprockets. Well the Thrustmaster was already on as well as the game sprockets. No good.
Then he says the next day, try turning off the Thrustmasterextension 'cause the game sprockets sw is doing about the same thing as game sprockets, maybe they are in conflict with eact other. Did that.
III....II....I and they'er off. Worked like a champ!! Kids 'bout knocked me out of the seat to give it a try.
So in the end, Appleguide off, Thrustmaster off, Game sprockets on. Apple guide may not have had anything to do with it but I'm not messin' with it now.

You guys are getting off track here.

Racer DOES support gamepads.

The incompatibility between Racer and the Gravis GamePad Pro is a known issue that has been discussed at length on MacFixit. The solution is to disable the extension "InputSprocket Gravis USB," which forces Apple's default driver to be used instead. Using this solution, I was able to use Racer with my GamePad Pro without using USBOverdrive.

Apparently there is a similar problem with your Ariston gamepad. I'm not familiar with this, but if your gamepad has a proprietary driver like the GamePad Pro does, try disabling it. If that doesn't work, you may want to try LucasArts' tech support - they're actually pretty good sometimes.
