Has anyone else tried this since 10.1.4 was released? It won't play the movies anymore Just a black screen with the sound playing in the background. I swear this worked in earlier OS X builds. I also had it crash out while trying to save. Now that bug is annoying I wonder if it was a one off. Well that is what Auto-Saves are for Brad, do you want me to send a crash log. I believe I have the crash log enabled. Just tell me where to look. I'll be glad to go get it. If it wasn't enabled, let me know where to go to enable it and I'll try to reproduce it. Thanks for the hard work. (I had to take a break from Civ III... The Sci Fi aspect of SMAC keeps me coming back again and again; What's that, mess with me... Here take this singularity bomb ).

I've had crashes with saving (and loading) ever since trying it out the first time, but now it seems they only happen if I use the keyboard shortcut (Cmd-S) - not if I select it from the menu. Maybe that was always the case and I never noticed the connection. Since some of the other shortcuts (F1-F12 at least) don't work, maybe the shortcuts are the problem. Brad, I know you're extremely busy, but if you could clear up this crashing bug we'd all be forever grateful.
For the movies not playing, hold option when starting and select "Don't switch resolution" in the box that pops up.

I'll give the option item a shot tonight. You know I did use Command-S for the Save. Hmmm, maybe it doesn't pay to know all the shortcut keys I know I screw up my system all the time with Carbon Diablo II by hitting Command-H to hide it. Try it... Then see if you can manage to quit it I guess I can manually click on the Save button. Funny thing is the F1-F12 buttons work fine. Got them to work last night while trying to refresh myself on what they did

Just tested my own res. option - it doesn't work anymore. _That_ is definately new since 10.1.4.

That's not cool It's going to be unfortunate if going forward system upgrades are going to kill older apps that probably won't see another upgrade I do recall having the movies work with an earlier version of OS X but that was a system reload ago. Forgot to back up my save games too Oh well, needed to start fresh anyways

Actually just today I have given up on SMAC and removed the icons from my dock. I dont' ever play them, they have problems and I have Civ 3 now anyway

I have Civ III, but SMAC is more enjoyable to play for me.

I tried it just now (in 10.1.4) and couldn't reproduce the crash. I ran the game in a window, if that makes any difference.
As for the movies, I couldn't reproduce that problem either. It sounds like a refresh rate problem, so choose a refresh rate that you know your monitor supports for 640x480, or have it not switch resolutions for the movies. If that doesn't fix it, I don't know what to tell you.

I firmly agree.

Well the movies ran tonight... Odd. Not running anything different... Maybe the save will work also. Had a hard lock with the App and had to restart the loginwindow... Messed up my dock etc. Good thing there's terminal BTW I don't have to worry about refresh rate (Cinema Display) and I run full screen... Can't stand updates in Windowed mode. BTW, thanks for the quick reply Brad.
You can get it at Brad Oliver's mac.com page: Here
Enjoy

Great to hear that you're still supporting a game several years old, Brad. BTW, I know at least two people who have paid for their pirated copies when I pointed them in the direction of your Carbon beta. In case you need to motivate this work to your bosses or something...
Running in a window seems to fix all possible problems, as far as I can tell right now. As for the movies: setting "don't switch res" means that the display freezes on the main screen (the board, like it looked when the movie should begin playing) and the sound plays in the background. Not setting it means the screen is black and the sound plays.
The savegame thing is intermittent, and has always been. Thus far I haven't seen it in windowed mode. This method seems to bring it up every time though:
1) Delete the Alien Crossfire X.plist/Alpha Centauri X.plist file from ~/Library/Preferences
2) Start the game, in full screen mode, and load your favourite savegame.
3) Immideately save by hitting Cmd-S (not by going to the menu). Change the directory you want to save in (it defaults to Documents, and I want it to be Saves in the SMAC folder so I can find my files if I play it in OS 9) and Save.
4) End the turn
5) As soon as you get control back, hit Cmd-S again.
Bang! It seems to default to Documents again, which is wrong - it should be Saves - before crashing within two seconds.

Forget anything I said about the keyboard shortcuts not working, it was just "Full Keyboard Control" that suddenly decided to use the Fkeys instead of Ctrl-Fkeys. The fact that the feature was disabled didn't seem to affect anything.
