ok. for some reason, the graphics are kind of crappy. it looks like it is displaying in 256 colors (i have tried setting it for thousands and millions).
I have a g4/500/agp and have tried with RAVE, without RAVE, open GL, etc. I have tried all resolutions available to me (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768).
same game on a PCI g4 450 with Sony CRT, the little mana and life balls at the bottom are nice and smooth. on my monitor, that is the place the poor color is most noticeable.
any ideas?

The reason you experience lower quality on your LCD is beacause the borders between pixels sharper. The CRT (even a high qual) will allways blur the image a bit.

I understand the principle of emulating 640x480 (or 800x600) on a flat panel.
this is not the problem I described. The application is switching the number of colors to 256 (most evident if i click cmd-m to minimize the diablo window so the desktop is visible, I can check my monitor settings to see that the colors have been switched to 256).
As you can see, it is not a matter of blurry image (that I get, but it is expected) from resolution emulation, but truly a change in monitor settings to 256 regardless of my settings prior to opening the game, and regardless of which options I choose in the game's settings.
Quitting Diablo restores my settings to millions (or whatever I may have had the monitor set to display).

I don't know about Diablo, but some 3D games have text files that you can edit to customize settings like color depth and screen resolution, based upon what you think your video card can handle. Alternatively, some games allow you to make those choices within the preferences of the game itself. Look for a file with "config" in the name, perhaps you can fix this problem.

In Diablo, the resolution is set. You can't change it.
