I play games on my indigo ibook - its got 192mb ram and 366mhz processor, but otherwise exactly the same specs as your ibook (no dvd drive either).

The one good feature about our model of ibooks is that they have the ati rage 128 mobility 8mb video card. Its the same one as in the new ibooks, ti powerbooks and most high end laptops in the pc market.

I play quake 3 arena urban terror 2 mod and it runs fine. I get around 25fps i spose - sometimes a little over 30 and other times a little under 20.

Now believe me, this isnt fantastic. But it is playable - and we are talking a laptop and an ibook at that. I am fairly competitive online despite the fact I play using my little ibook.

So having said all this, that game will run fine on your ibook. Run it at 640x480 res with 32 bit colour. If its choppy, turn down a few of the graphic details and maybe try 16 bit colour. Im sure you wont have any trouble at all with it.

G5 Imac, 17", 1.9Ghz, 1.5GB RAM, 128MB video, built in isight, airport and bluetooth
Indigo iBook, 366mhz; 320MB RAM; CD; FW; Airport

You can always tweak your Quake config. for better performance, but at the cost of reduced eye candy. Check out these sites for good info:

Highly recommended, with downloadable .cfg files:
http://guides.barrysworld.com/quake3/

Other good sources of info:
http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/Quake3/FPS_visuals.html
http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/Quake3/connection.html
http://WWW.planetquake.com/features/...chtips000212_b
http://console.q3center.com/variables.html

This should be a good start. You've got plenty of RAM, so be sure to allocate lots of it to Quake in the "get info" option (select the Quake app, get info under file menu. With 320 MB RAM, as long as you have nothing else running, you can probably give Quake around 150 MB. Just check About this Computer for the amount of free memory, and then allocate all but about 25 MBs to Quake, leaving some for background processes and or networking.

I would think that for your iBook the bottelneck for Quake performance will be the low vRAM of the video card. The more vRAM you have, the more textures can be stored there for fast retrieval. So for tweaking, you're probably going to get the best results by adjusting variables related to texture detail.

As always, drop mixahead down to 0.11. If the sound is clipped, then up it in 0.01 increments.

Good luck!
